IMO, doesn't really matter what happens the rest of the season. Staying is really the only option if we want to win.
Which is built by not having coaching turnover. Your post really isn't disagreeing with my post. You just don't want GMac as ISU's coach anymore which is fine.
I do not think that is entirely accurate. We are counting on MCC's backcourt making our existing backcourt better. Would a Mike Taylor make our backcourt better? Would Mike Taylor's JuCo teammate Stefhon Hannah make our backcourt better?
Even without the additions, this should be McD's best backcourt. The additions may take that position to finally a winning Big 12 level.
I disagree. The point of my post is that Greg has been the coach for 4 years now. The program is in constant turmoil and the rate of player turnover is outrageous. 99.9% of the time you have to have a solid group of players to build a program around. We don't. We can't keep guys around long enough to build a program. Sure we kept CB around but the guys we tried to bring in to compliment him are leaving as soon as they get here. We have had at least one guy that we brought in that we couldn't even keep on campus for more then 1 semester. Have you noticed that some of the guys that have bailed are flourishing in other programs? Maybe that is because those other programs have the stability that our program lacks.
Just because you can get a coach to stick around doesn't mean the program is stable. Our program is one of the most disfunctional programs in the country.
KG, late to the party here. No trying to pick a fight, but how can you say we have stability in the program right now?
Lucca left in the middle of the year
We have players that go home and don't come back for a week in the middle of the season
We suspend a player for having a bad attitude towards the coaches
We have guys transfer every off season
Next season we will have 3 new starters on the team
Stability?
1.) It could be McD's best backcourt and probably will. I would argue we've had the worst backcourt in the conference the last 3 years at least though.
2.) We have no idea if they are as good as Taylor and Hannah.
I think he probably defines "stability" different than you.
2.) that is recruiting every year, at almost any program
You can't build a program around players in college. You have to build it around the coach. Players are here and gone like that. You can build seasons around players but not the program.
Are you kidding? We aren't talking about programs like UNC here. We are talking about Iowa State. How many 1 and done players has ISU ever recruited? Fizer was one of the best players that ISU ever had and he was here 3 years. ISU isn't a program that is capable of bringing in kids that will be jumping to the NBA after their first year. It is all about building around the guys that you have in place. The problem is that we can't build around the guys that we have in place because from year to year we don't even know who is going to be here. How can a coach recruit effectively a year or more in advance if he doesn't even know who will be here and who won't? This is how we wind up with such an unbalanced team. Our frontcourt is decent but our backcourt stinks. Our backcourt is good the next year and our frontcourt stinks. On and on we go.

I know, I'm just saying, are these two guys good enough to make up for the lost production from Brackins and Strap? Brackins has had a disappointing year but it seemed like a lot of people were thrilled about losing Taylor and his TO's too. Losing your best player is never a good thing.
I have been pleasantly surprised by Strap as well, he's better than I thought he would be. This team is soft as baby crap right now and also how will that be corrected by bringing in Clyburn and Wilkins who are both skinny as rails? (This is also assuming we even sign those two, and I doubt we get Wilkins now that he has the IU offer.)
Once those players are gone, you're back to the bottom if you try to structure around players. You structure your program around your coach so player graduation or leaving early for the NBA doesn't have long term or short term effects. When Fizer was here, the program wasn't structured around him. The team was structured around him for the time he was here but the program was structured around LE.
How do you know who to recruit? How do you know what your needs are going to be year to year and what positions are positions that you must fill? It is all based on the guys that you have in the program already. How can you recruit effectively if you have no idea who is staying and who is bailing? The environment inside the program is obviously not stable enough to keep players around. This makes recruiting a complete crapshoot. Currently we have to be recruiting based on the fact that MG and CB are going to be gone. Thus we aren't recruiting as many guards and we are not recruiting a true PG. So what happens if Colvin bails? Or Dendy? Or both? Do we have a plan for that or been planning for that?
