^^This^^. I don't get the bagging on Zeb. He didn't play bad for us. I think CMC just wanted to give Brock some reps and he just lit it up. Zeb knew what was ahead of him here and decided to go elsewhere.
Now he is the #2 QB on a team who's last two starters are in the NFL. Who knows what could happen from here.

I liked Zeb. I recall making arguments that he was better suited than Kempt to utilize Butler's strengths.

I did question the timing of when he left though. It seems like he got a pass since it was clear that he wasn't going to be the starter if he stayed at Iowa State, but I always thought leaving as early as he did was selfish. He left us pretty thin at QB and the team had plenty to play for.

Noland started last season as the backup but played several games as the starting quarterback. Not wishing injury on anyone at NDSU, but Noland could still get plenty of time as QB1 by earning the spot during the season or by default.

Also, I learned that NDSU is playing their home opener at Target Field in Minneapolis against Butler University. Strange.
When you consider how many recruits they get from the Twin Cities and the area around them (W. Wisconsin and E. Minnesota) it makes perfect sense. It is also convenient for players they get from further south like N. Iowa.

Simmons is the returning starter, who led the conference in passing yardage. Not surprising he would get the nod.

Believe me, I know who Austin Simmons is and what he did last year. That was also 4-7 team that got scorched against the top half of the Valley.

QB is such a fickle position and there is so much of it that is mental. Park was super talented. Go back and watch the Iowa game from 17. Moore was never going to play here. I am totally surprised about Dean. Thought he had nice quarterback skill, I think his plight is more about Bouman and Dekkers. One of those two will be solid, it is just strange that they are both lefties.

Rhoads never seemed to ever stick with one guy at qb. Difference is Rhoads would have never landed a guy like Purdy.
Thats more a product of him not having any clue how to personnel manage or run an offense. Mostly the 2nd.

Kempt and Purdy were both hits for sure.

Noland
Moore
Dean
Park

All misses

Mitchell TBD
How can you say a true freshman is a miss? With Purdy and Mitchell being so young and two great freshmen coming in next year, I doubt Dean ever sees time at QB, but that doesn't mean he is a miss. It means we finally have some talent and depth. And that is why he has been working with the TE's. Watch, in 2021 he is going to be getting playing time as a TE.

This is true. I was speaking of talent only. Hate it when guys leave mid-season.

Playing devil's advocate here. Rhoads did rotate a lot of QBs, but we've also started 5 different QBs in 3 years under Campbell. Would anyone claim that Campbell doesn't know how to manage personnel or run an offense? I always thought QB was the least of our worries under Rhoads. For the most part, they were solid. The program went in the tank when the offensive line depth went in the *****er and we had no defensive. Campbell won games with Kyle Kempt because we had a great defense and an NFL running back. I don't think Kempt was any better than a Sam Richardson for example.

We've rotated QBs less on necessity and more on improved talent (with the exception of the Park/Kempt debacle). That's acceptable, and the positional group as a whole has shown improvement.

I can't say the same for Rhoads -- the QB groups he had never seemed to markedly improve or increase in talent.

Why is Dean on this list? They know he could be a potential TE, other schools were also recruiting him as one. Not sure he deserves to be listed with the others.
Why is this even a narrative at all? Dean is still a qb at least as of last week unless I missed something.

I don't know, I think Purdy is the only one that you could argue is a clear improvement over Rhoad's QBs, and we still have a pretty small sample size on him. I think Purdy is the start of a huge upgrade at the position and will continue with the two freshman coming in next year. I don't think there was much improvement from Lanning-Kempt-Noland. The only one who stood out talent wise was Park, like you said. He was just a head-case.

You wouldn't take Kyle Kempt over Grant Rohach? I love Grant and all, but consistent QB play is one of the reasons Rhoad's offenses were pretty bad, especially after Herman left.

And Lanning WAS a Rhoads QB who ended up playing better under CMC, though he probably should have been switched to LB earlier in his college career. He could have been All Big 12 there for multiple seasons.

Noland is a good QB and probably as good as any Rhoads QB. He's learning an entirely new system at NDSU and I'm not surprised he's not the starter. Doesn't mean he never will be.
People seem to be getting hung up on NDSU being an FCS school and that Zeb couldn't immediately come in and dominate. NDSU has had multiple QBs drafted the last few years. Including Carson Wentz and Easton Stick.
NDSU develops talent and the position. Period.

Agreed. And I think Dekkers will be a big time stud. Everything is pointing to it. But you just never know at that position.
