IIRC, each Big 12 school had to pay something like $20k for the extra official, so I could see why ISU would vote against this.
Better than 25k

Yeah, I don't care for JP's apology at all. What's he apologizing for? Either stand by what you believe or don't. Don't kiss up.
If there are 8 officials, then how in the hell was the holding call by the DB covering Bibbs not called on the early 3rd & short, play-action play? Think I am as ****** about that play as the review overturning the call on the field right before half.
As to the state of residence it wouldn't matter because one of the main culprits that has screwed ISU is from Iowa.
Gotta admit. Being the lone vote against an 8th official hardly seems worthy of a witch hunt by the conference.
Some sort of personal vendetta? I don't buy it, but it could (has) happened. Does JP think they're out to get us because we potentially cut back their potential income or something?
Every fan base of every team that loses a game thinks the refs suck. It's "The Boy Who Cried Wolf" any more.
Because it increases the incompetence level on the field!
Easy for tuco to say when his team was on the positive end of the con job two years ago that garnered an apology from the conference and reassignment of officials. And the famous dead ball three pointer in 2005 that I've never seen before or since in watching 35 years of basketball. The difference with Iowa State is that the complaints are tangible and Bowlsby and league officials know it. Pollard had absolutely nothing to lose with his press conference. $25,000 is immaterial and so what if the officials respond by jobbing ISU in the future. It can't get any worse than it's been. And it does put Big XII officials in the national spotlight. Say they make an obvious blunder like they did in the KState and OKState games, it WILL call their competency and integrity into question.
I think it boils down to Ego. This guy lives and breaths officiating and this was his pet.So this boils down to Walt Anderson wanting more money for every Big XII game and more power for himself with the larger budgets. And we also have pretty clear evidence, that when one school had the audacity to say that isn't needed, he also has tried to punish that school with several terrible calls. Now we have a petty lead official who only cares about himself and the others refs wallets and not integrity of the game. Got it.
Also remember earlier this year during a Tech or OSU game I believe, the eighth official looked clueless. They had to stop the game several times after they had snapped the ball, once penalized the offense for going to quick, and all around slowed the game down. Even the announcers were getting confused with what they were doing.
I totally support Pollard and sincerely appreciate him standing up for ISU. On the other hand, Bowlsby's statement smacked of so much arrogance, it's repulsive and sickening.
My guess is the Big 12 told Pollard to make something up for the 9-1 vote to clear things up. Really don't think it was the 8th official Pollard was talking about
At first I thought this was kind of a tinfoil hat idea, but when you listen to what JP actually said:
"Coach Rhoads and I, a year and a half ago, raised an issue. And we were the lone vote. And ever since that time, we've been on the short end of the stick."
It just doesn't seem to make sense with the idea of the vote that he is now claiming we opposed. Why would he say "raised an issue" with respect to the 8th official vote? Wouldn't that have been raised by everyone else, with ISU opposing the raising of the issue itself? I don't think this is mere semantics, because I don't think a person speaking honestly and openly would use the "raised an issue" language when talking about ISU's position in that vote.
Add on top of that the fact that the 8th official vote was reported to have been unanimous, and I think a good journalist would dig into this further. It wouldn't surprise me if the Big 12 told JP that he could not talk about the issue in question, which I guess would be the case for a personnel issue - i.e. if they wanted Walt Anderson or some specific football officials let go from the league.
Hoping to see somebody dig into this some more.
I totally agree. I'm confused.
