Ron Zook:

Year One: You lose big
Year Two: You lose close
Year Three: You win close

That has worked at Illinois, remember folks saying a couple years ago they would be good and they are good now. But, they weren't good for quite a while, so it takes some time.

We could have, probably should have won this game, BUT, great effort by the players for laying it out on the field. Losing is always hard but this was the 16th ranked team we just played. I don't think a few years ago we play a team like this close. What happened in the 3rd qtr, I don't know, I wasn't there. We have alot of youth on this team and the talent is on the rise. We are getting better and are going to be alot better.

Yes, we will have some downs along the way. We are ISU, but I say to hell w/ all the negative vibe of the past. We are on the way up. We will surprise some people this year. Next year with an improved run game, we will be a very tough out for anybody.

Good game Clones! Keep your heads up and the wins will come.

Their 4th down conversions combined with our lack of 3rd down conversions

there were a couple 3rd and shorts in the 3rd qtr that looked like if Arnaud and Robinson had just put their heads down and went straight up field they would have made 1st downs EASY. instead they tried a juke or 2 and came up inches short.

Was the defense tired the whole second half? The only time we stopped them was the fumble, and then we promptly gave it back.
The first TD was just blown coverage. The defense can only take so many 3 and outs from the offense before it runs out of gas especially against an offense like Kansas.

Illinois has also had Top 20 recruiting classes the last couple years... something ISU hasn't even sniffed yet.

Goals for the rest of the year:

1.) Win a road game
2.) Beat either Nebraska or A&M
3.) At the very least, have the end of the Mizzou game be as gut-wrenching as the end of the Kansas game.

I like these goals. Road games have always been a challenge for ISU. It's always fun to beat Nebraska and A&M would be a win over another big name. Missouri looks like they're pretty good, I'd be okay with a competitive game.

Recruiting class ranks are extremely overrated. Nobody knows how good a class is going to be when they first get to college. Just look at ours now. This one was ranked in the bottom half in a lot of publications but the freshman are looking pretty damn good right now.

Kansas' defense handled it okay in the first half when we dominated time of possession.

KU had the ball for 2 minutes longer than us in the second half, I believe. We won TOP by over 5 and a half minutes.

If the excuse is our defense was tired, then we need to stop talking up our new conditioning and strength program.

Seems to me like they made halftime adjustments, and we couldn't stop them to save our life. Someone tell me why I'm wrong.

We may have to settle for 3 more moral victories and a lotta losses.

Or maybe--here's a crazy thought--we don't have as much depth as we'd like. After all, we've got plenty of safeties and linebackers to toss out there, don't we?

And it's not like some of the starters on defense don't have decided shortcomings...:skeptical:
