How confident are you in Paul Rhoads ability to make ISU a winning program

I think Iowa State's chance at having consistent winning seasons is going to be tough. Past coaches always had the benefit of rotating away from Okla St, Oklahoma, and/or Texas every few years.

As long as we play all the Big 12 teams every year and have Iowa as a non conference game, we will battle 500 seasons, with an occasional 8-4 season. I think that is going to be the case with about any coach we get here.

Dan McCarney was the best thing ever to happen to cyclone football....before mccarney went over to icity to beat hayden and the hawks ending a zero for 15 stretch, nobody and I mean nobody gave a rats A** about cyclone football.

Without Danny Mac who started the ball rolling on our facilities upgrades aka expanding the Jacobson bldg., we would still be winning one or two games a year consistently...aka the criner and walden years.

I do know one thing from my experience around ISU fans and that's ...Thee MESS er Corey messingham has to GO or a whole lot of season tickets holders will be throwing their renewals into the trash can...

This season is an unmitigated disaster and someone has to pay for it, and the fan base has already decided its thee mess of an off coordinator.

Go Cyclones beat the 'Pokes!

It may be a blessing if some of you didn't renew your tickets. We'd be better off without the negativity.

I don't follow the recruiting as closely as others, but this point has been mentioned in several threads, that ISU recruiting classes under Rhoads have been consistently ranked at the bottom of the Big 12. But there is a relative aspect to these rankings...

Say on a scale of 0-100, is ISU's situation more like the case where the top-ranked school gets a score of 100, middle of the pack scores 92, and ISU scores 85, or is it more like the case where the top-ranked school gets a score of 100, middle of the pack scores 85, and ISU scores 50?

In the former case, the talent disparity is probably not so great and good coaching could get ISU to finish in the middle of the pack as far as conference wins go. In the latter case, the talent disparity is likely too great for ISU to get more than 2-3 conference wins.

I don't understand this sentiment either. When ISU hired CPR, there was uncertainty about conference alignment and revenue, which probably limited what could be paid for salary. With the current TV deal and (supposed) conference statbility, there is significantly more revenue available to lure in a coach.

Wasn't Johnny Orr the highest or nearly highest paid MBB coach, at least for a short while, after ISU signed him?

Iowa may win 7 games with their schedule, so KF is costing 3.7M or $450k per victory.

CPR could only win one, and that would cost $1.6M. Paul needs to win four to be a better monetary deal.

Remember when CPR came on board? Here is the original staff starting salaries. Head coach makes as much as his staff put together, much like basketball.

Oh I get it - if you praise Mac and give him credit, you're considered "negative." But you criticize Mac and diminish what the man accomplished, that's fine...because it puts the current program in a better light...yeah, I get it now.

Oh, but never mind the woeful bowl losses to powerhouses Rutgers and Tulsa, where ISU looked almost disinterested in front of legions of Cyclone faithful. Mac's teams were proud to play in bowls. Also, you don't find the last couple of games of 2012 and the season so far in 2013 to be alarming? Really?

Hey... it isn't often you can find a coach that wins 5 games combined over 2 seasons with a Heisman Trophy caliber running back carrying the rock. Who was the first coach in Big XII history to lose a home game against an awful Baylor football program? Let's not forget about Danny Mac's magical 2000 season at ISU. A 9-3 record... a miracle season... or the product of beating Ohio, UNLV, a 3 win Iowa team, a 2 win Baylor team, a 3 win Okie State team, a 3 win Mizzou team, a 3 win Colorado team, a 4 win Kansas team, and a 7 win Pittsburgh team in the bowl game. Let's disregard the fact that the 3 teams with a pulse that ISU played that season (Nebraska, A&M, and K-State) all trounced ISU. If we are speaking the truth here then let's let it all out.

This may be one of the worst posts I have ever seen on CF. There is a reason that ISU has one of the smallest athletic budgets of any BCS conference team and a major reason is that ISU just doesn't have the numbers in their fanbase like many other schools have. Negativity is a part of sports and being a fan of a sports team. Things aren't always going to go well and the only recourse the fans have is to voice their displeasure with what is going on and to quit showing up to games. Wishing that "negative" fans would just go away is silly. Iowa State can't afford for any fans to abandon ship. If you don't like the negativity I would suggest that maybe you find a different way to spend your time then being on a message board. Be glad that the portion of the fanbase that is upset currently is choosing to express their negativity by posting on CF rather then by choosing to not show up to games or to quit donating.

I think he can make them exactly what he has shown. 6-7 wins at best with low seasons like this one. I don't think he has what it takes to make them a contender in the big 12.

Really? When was the last time ISU was a contender in the Big XII or Big 8? I have been around a long time and I believe this coach has the best chance of anyone since Earl Bruce.

Honest question. Will CPR ever win 8-10 games at Iowa State or do we have to be realistic with abilities and realize that 6 wins may be his ceiling? My buddy and I were debating this earlier today and I think someday Rhoads may have a good season where these upsets and passion result in some real momentum for our program and that the upsets against ranked teams aren't just flukes but an actual representation of a good football team.

Maybe 2015 is my guess, until then I'm just going to try and be realistic and hope to see improvement. However, I will not settle with 3 wins. What bothered me most with his press conference today was when he mentioned, "No Iowa State is not past the blow out losses at this point, referring to OU and Utah in 2010" That really bothers me. No coach should settle for 50+ point losses and ever deem it "acceptable" and he pulled the "This team is young excuse, expect bad losses"

Anyways, just something to ponder. I think he is right for Iowa state but he is going to need to make offensive changes at the end of the year for me to have any confidence. He mentioned today that the offense has been quote "God awful, terrible and that side of the ball is where we need to improve most" but if Messingham isn't gone then how serious is he really with moving us forward in terms of offense?

How will you 'not settle'. What actions will you take besides ***** and moan on a message board?

Also, what else could he say?

Rhoads: "We are beyond blowout losses as a team her at Iowa State."
Reporter: "Coach, you just lost by 64."
Rhoads: "What do you mean."

I'd put $20 on an 8 win season next year right now.

I'm extremely confident in CPR. Looking at our youth and recent recruiting, there is no reason to believe that the future is bright over the next few years. If we don't get back into bowl contention and perhaps better over the next couple of years, then this kind of talk may be warranted. But this kind of talk right now is idiotic.

Well, you have to wonder about his recruiting abilities. All of the things that seemed to be his trademarks as a coach just disappeared last week. Even before the game he just seemed to be stoic and didn't have the fire that we're used to seeing. During the game everything that gave him an edge in big games went away. The playcalling was predictable and not even close to creative. We were playing to not get blown out and in doing so were handed the worst loss in our history. Baylor was playing to win... going for it on 4th, squib kicks, trick plays etc. We were punting on 4th and 1 in Baylor territory (or it seemed like it...) He went from a gutsy coach to a guy who I am fairly confident that I could outcoach. Let's hope that he's just not getting too comfortable with a seven figure salary. I hated Chizik from day one and took a lot of flack on this site for saying so. I've liked CPR from day one and still do... but I am very very disappointed in him at this moment.

I think many feel the recent recruiting is a big concern. I hear a lot of people talking about all the talent on this team. Is there really that much talent throughout the roster?

People love talking about talent but if we had real talent we wouldn't EVER lose to an FCS team, get blown out by 64 points, be 1-5, etc.

That is a talent disparity and coaching disparity. Be delusional about it and say we just didn't have a good game plan but you don't get beat around by 5 out of 6 teams we've played because of bad coaching period, its the talent too. Quite frankly, I think the only players on our team that would sniff the field at a top 25 school would be Wimberly and Bundrage thats it. George/Washington better get good grades and graduate because they will not be in the NFL.

With that said, I'm still looking forward to next season. I'm over this season and have given up completely (Yep I'm that guy right now). Like I said, I'll support these players but I will not support this coaching staff right now until Rhoads gives me a reason to support his crap-tastic job of a year so far (Fire Messingham, get your nuts back, better play calling, lets see improvement). Losing a game by 7 is not improvement. Its still losing. Improvement means winning and out competiting your opponent. Blah, get me to basketball season.

Our recent recruiting, while improving, is still at the bottom of the B12. We can't just compare our recruiting classes to previous ISU classes. Until we start getting classes that rank in the 4th-5th-6th range in the B12, I can't see us getting beyond 7 wins and having almost no margin of error to get to those 7 wins.

Real talent wouldn't EVER lose to an FCS school?? Tell that to Michigan.

Michigan entered the game as the No. 5-ranked team in both the AP Poll and the Coaches' Poll. Media outlets projected the team as favorites to win the Big Ten conference, as well as to contend for a national championship.[SUP][1][/SUP] Michigan featured a strong senior class of offensive tackle Jake Long, tailback Mike Hart, and quarterback Chad Henne, each of whom had decided to stay in school rather than declare eligibility for the NFL Draft. The players attributed their decision to several factors, such as Michigan having lost their last three games to rival Ohio State and the Wolverines' streak of three consecutive bowl losses. The three also desired to finish their college careers on a high note. Mark Schlabach of ESPN.com stated that "[the trio], along with receivers Mario Manningham and Adrian Arrington, gives Michigan what could potentially be one of the most explosive offenses in college football".[SUP][19][/SUP] Prior to the season, the team named Hart and Long as captains, in addition to linebacker Shawn Crable, a fifth-year senior.[SUP][20][/SUP]

I guess you also missed the article from Michigan players where they admitted to partying into the night before the game and the numerous starters and players who were smoking weed before the game. They were joking that they could be high and hungover and still beat Appalachian State and decided to do it just to see. Give credit to Appalachian State but if you line them up against Michigan 10 times that year, Michigan beats them 9/10. Just saying
