I'll be underwhelmed.

The guy who suggests promoting from within is underwhelmed?

Probably a 10 year contract starting at 1.5 and ending at 2.5 w/ a 750k per season buyout. The Paul Rhoads special, as some would call it.

Hindsight is 20/20. When Pollard gave Rhoads that deal most people were happy about it since we were afraid of losing him to a bigger name program like Wisconsin.

I have little doubt that Pollard would try to lowball it. Just offer 2.5 and get him locked in.

I can't imagine this would get leaked unless it's virtually a done deal.

If Campbell's side leaked it before it was a done deal, I'd almost pull the offer if I were JP. That is bush league on Campbell's part if that were to happen.

Totally. If this is the guy you definitively want, you definitely pull the offer because someone on their side may have gotten a little overexcited about it and said something to the wrong person.

I can see the interview, "Can you consistently beat coaches that make twice as much money as you do?" "What creative money saving methods have you used to create a winning atmosphere?"

I get not overpaying and agree with it, but come on. This is the Big 12 and you are asking someone to come in and totally revamp the culture of the locker room. CPR was like a father to some of the guys, and was good to them and that is great, but we have no idea how to win games or what it takes.

If you believe Campbell can do the job you pay like it should, or find someone that is worth what a top notch big 12 coach costs. Don't go Charlie Weis, impress my fans by spending stupid money, but you are going to go way into the red if the stadium gets empty in a year or two.

I like the guy but I prefer Fleck. Fleck has spent some time in the NFL and is a proven recruiter. I also like the fact that he has taken a team from 1 win and built them into a solid program. Campbell just maintained a winning program.

Did he not help build that winning program before taking over?

So ISU is hiring a HC with 4 years experience at one school that we should have beaten this year and passing on Willie Fritz who has 19 years experience as a HC at 3 different schools and of the 19 years only 2 losing seasons - ok... go state.

If Campbell is on his way to Ohio State we may get a good decade or more out of him - perhaps long enough to change the culture at Iowa State.

Jack Trice's Iowa State coach was from Ohio and I think he left us to coach Ohio State.

Willie Fritz has 2 years as a head coach at the FBS level. Georgia Southern moved from FCS to FBS when Fritz arrived.

Matt Campbell is 35 years old. He was the youngest coordinator in FBS and then became the youngest head coach in FBS 4 years ago.
