This is a solid Virginia team that finished 2nd in the Conference with the most S16 teams. I'm impressed with their win list:
+ pounded W Virginia
+ Nova
+ Cal
+ NotreDame
+ Miami
+ Louisville
+ Pitt
+ UNC

We will need the game we played at KU a couple weeks ago and hope we keep the fouls and TOs down. It would be nice to see Monte back to getting double-digits points.

thats the jankiest "message board" i've ever seen
Agree, although not sure what 'jankiest' means. I have a good idea though.Makes you/us thankful we have our website here, like it is, one of the best out there, IMO. I've seen some other boards like their's; not a knock on their fans, just that I can't stay long, too hard to navigate.

Im super nervous. If we bring A game and a little luck we can win. But an off night shooting and it could be a blowout. Hopefully the werk off doesnt disrupt their flow.

We've now strung together 4 very good performances in a row. If we continue to play like we have been, we will have a decent shot at them.

Also......lost to both George Washington and Virginia Tech. Beat William @ Mary by 5 and Wake Forest by 1.

Meh, no reason to be nervous at this point. We're the underdog now, so we're basically playing with house money. If we win, it will be amazing. If not, it was still a run ride

I agree, but I also know the players don't see it that way at all. They want to leave their mark, and I'm not ready to stop watching these seniors.

This will be a tough game for our Cyclones. Strong, physical teams which hit the offensive glass hard give us problems. I really hope we stay out of foul trouble; if we do, I like our chances as our offense is really something special to behold. We need a little luck and hopefully we continue to box out really well on defense.

They actually aren't THAT strong on the offensive glass. They get around 8.8 Off RPG.

Compare that to:

ISU: 8.6
Baylor: 13.3
WVU: 15.9

If we control this for tempo/possessions maybe it ends up being a more impressive number, but I don't think their strategy is to hit the offensive glass that hard. They are a slow team, but an efficient one in terms of FG %. They like to get back and settle in on defense to prevent transition and force you into a half court game, which plays to their strength, half court defense.

So i was talking to my one of my non iowa state guy friend about the sweet sixteen matchup to get a non bias opinion on the game.

He told me he saw us winning for 2 reasons:

1) He said UVA plays too slow to take advantage of our defensive weaknesses.

2) which he believes is the biggest reason, he said our guys play the best as underdogs. He said two years ago everyone wrote us off vs UNC and we came out and won. After people thought we would win vs a 7 seed and we lost.

I like our chances. UVA struggles against shooters and if everyone is hot we will win. We need to watch how UNC beat them. Wait for them to double Niang and have him lob it to McKay or an open Matt Thomas.

I want us crashing the party and being the team everyone overlooks each game.

Eh. I could make just as much an argument that we were motivated to beat UNC for Georges and the nobody in the tournament beat that 7 seed.

Keep in mind how many fewer shots go up in a Virginia game verses an ISUgame...that needs to be considered when comparing one of the fastest pace teams to one of the slowest. To get a true look you would need to factor percentage of rebounds ( but I don't think they are a dominant offensive glass team regardless)

Virginia is a nightmare draw. Very impressive team that exploits our weaknesses. Gonna have to play a damn near perfect game. Undisciplined, quick shots will be our undoing. Run offense through George EVERY single time and stay out of foul trouble.

Agreed, if you control for tempo, they appear to be an average offensive rebounding team(28% offensive rebounding rate vs our 25%). I'm just saying they aren't monsters on the glass like the teams that have owned us this year, like Baylor(39%) and WVU(41%) who are some of the best rebounding teams in the country.

They are, however extremely efficient on the offensive end, shooting 49.8% from the field to our 50.1%. They don't score a lot because they like to grind it out in the half court to our more free flowing run and gun style of play.

They're also a great defensive rebounding team, rebounding on 75% of their opponents misses.

Only point I was trying to make is that while they will be an extremely tough out due to their offensive/defensive efficiency combined with pace of play, they are not all that similar to the teams that have owned us this year in WVU/Baylor.
