Coaching rankings - last 55 years
1. Campbell
2. Bruce
3. Majors
4. Tie between Duncan and McCarney
6. Rhoads
7. Criner
8. Walden
9. Chizik

Duncan was underrated IMO.
I know the results are going to say I'm crazy but I also never thought Walden was terrible. Things didn't work out. Probably was not good enough.

But IDK if he himself was a disaster or just one of those things were he just wasn't cut out of the challenge at the time and then fate worked against him or if he was always gonna fail no matter what.

I think his timeline was basically that he tried to make it work, realized he wouldn't get the support (maybe called out the AD publicly too?) and trolled them with running weird offenses or something iirc (I was a little kid so only going by what I've read and barely remember).

He was a character though who fit personality wise alongside Orr who occasionally did some exciting things.

One could argue apples to oranges. The college football climate is so radically different today than when Snyder took over. So many different obstacles. And though the circumstances 'when' he took over could be advantage ISU, the subsequent path I'd argue has been more difficult for CMC than the vamp.
Entry requirements lowered for Snyder in the beginning.

I'm still extended... been way more than 4 hours. Doc office is closed. Might have to go to the ER.

I’ve been saying for years.

He is not taking any other job.

Unless it’s Notre Dame or Ohio State.

Not a guess.

Everything else in college is considered a lateral move at best.

And I am NOT saying he will ever get those other jobs.

Those brave and honest folks who were willing to publicly wonder if the rot had set in with CMC's leadership and management of the ISU Football Program.

The thread was started on Sept. 17, 2023 after ISU had just been embarrassed in Athens, Ohio against the Ohio Bobcats in front of under 22,000 fans and broadcast on ESPN+.

ISU was in the midst of going 2-10 in its last 12 games, including a 62-10 loss at TCU to end the 2022 season.
And the same people crawl out from under their stones every time we lose like clockwork.

As I’ve posted before, two things can be true: CMC is the greatest coach in school history and has taken the program to things we didn’t think possible (multiple Alamo/Citrus Bowls, winning records in league play, regular season B12 champ, 2x CCG, Fiesta Bowl W, now 10 wins). But, there could be a real ceiling we’ve hit.

To this point, Campbell has not been able to find the heights that Bill Snyder was able to at K-State. That’s who I hope CMC is for us. He’s just finished year 9. Can we reach a higher level someday? Maybe. Hopefully even as soon as next year. So far, we’ve lost more of the big end-of-season games than we’ve won. We still haven’t won the league and we have a losing record in bowl games, including some real stinkers. I know people don’t seem to care about bowls now, but a win over Miami in a couple weeks would do wonders for our reputation. And, 11-3 looks a lot better than 10-4.

Campbell has coached at Iowa State for nine years.

Snyder was the head coach for K-State for 27 years.

He won the 10-team conference twice and won the (weaker) Big 12 North three times.

He first won the conference in... year #15.

He first won the division in... year #10.

A. Better than the Fiesta Bowl? Let’s skip the recency bias, please.

B. Is there some reason not to think that the program is steadily trending upwards?

I mean, the wins are a hint, but I assure you the recruiting classes are bringing in much better athletes overall than we were getting five years ago.
A. Read my post, I said "play better" in those games.

Under Campbell the Cyclones are 2-4 in 6 bowl games (and staring at an uphill battle vs Miami.)

They have played poorly in a lot of the bowl games too (ND Camping World being the most brutal.) Last year vs Memphis was pretty bad too.

0-2 in Championship games. Put up a good fight vs OU, but still lost in crunch time like Clemson in Cheez-It bowl. I don't need to tell anymore how poorly we played last Saturday vs ASU.

B. Never said this wasn't true. Future is still bright, I'm very far from doom & gloom. I just don't want Campbell's legacy to be a great regular season coach and a subpar postseason coach. Plenty of time to change the champ game/bowl game trend. Just want to buck that trend ASAP. And agree on recruiting, that is how he'll do it.

The biggest winner in this news of Campbell extension is the student in the student section who dresses up like him with the headset in the crowd. God I love that guy.

What we are seeing - in real time - is that Campbell is becoming the Mike Gundy/Bill Snyder/Kirk Ferentz of our program. He loves it here.

Some would rather be a prince for a lifetime than a king for 2 years. The next coach of FL State, the Jets, or the Browns, mathematically will be out of a job in 2.5 years or so. That just isn't attractive to most people. Matt has been loyal to us, and we have been super loyal to him. It's a great relationship and I'm thrilled to have him as Coach. Make the statue when he retires.

With the exception of Memphis last year, CMC teams have faced higher ranked teams in every bowl but the Fiesta, which he won. He has taken us to higher level bowls against higher level opponents, than the past. This isn’t the Pinstripe and Houston Bowls anymore. This year is another example of where we are in a higher level bowl than we’ve normally been in against another higher ranked opponent. I’m a little more forgiving on the bowl record since we’ve been punching above our weight, again, with the exception of last year…which is the one I am only reason upset about.

That's fine, but I will always reject this mentality. I GET why Cyclone fans have this over the years. I really, really do.

"Just happy to be there" and being fine getting smoked by name brands like Notre Dame or even getting whacked by non powerhouses like ASU & Memphis. Idk...it will just always bug me. Beating Oregon in Fiesta Bowl was great. If we can beat Miami in Orlando that will really help imo. I don't expect CFBP or National titles.

But just getting there and losing because we're "punching above our weight" just reeks of I'm okay with just being good enough, but not great. I do want Iowa State to win and beat elites and beat good non-powerhouses in trophy situations. I don't expect us to be Nick Saban Alabama obvs, but we need to start racking up more trophies (Big XII & Bowl.)
