Will CPR try to run over the Panthers or pass on them?

I hear ya Redman - trust me - i would luv to be mr optimistic...this is not tennessee tech....this is a formidable opponent....

I love to revisit stats....because in this case the main changes have occurred on our side of the ball which is optimistic when you only have 93 yards passing in a spread offense. However - to commend our opponent, they ranked 10th nationally against the run in the fcs. Against us, they were slightly over their average per rush at 3.3 yards when their average for the season was 3.09 yards per carry. Thats a telling stat that they are well coached and have players to get the job done. Now they have lost none of those kids in the front 7 only backups. Furthermore, a much more balanced team they faced in 2009 in iowa city and ranked 22 nationally only mustered 87 yards rushing against this team. UNI has built their defense around stopping the run at all cost including getting burnt through the air. For us to be successful, I THINK, we need to use the passing game to get them out of their strength and then roadgrade them!!!!!

No argument here. Those are some awesome Defensive stats. Last year we had Tiller playing, which had to effect their agressiveness on D. I really think that if AA started and played the whole game we would look at least SOMEWHAT better offensively. He was a gamer. (Just a thought, was the faked FG that Mahoney ran for a first down factored into our YPC? How long of a run was that?)

I'm expecting a very close game. We haven't proven that we are head and shoulders better than anyone, and UNI isn't just anyone. I hope our D is quick enough to prevent big plays. We do not shut this team out this year! They will test us for sure and I think everyone on the team and staff knows that. We will learn a ton about our guys from this game.

hopefully we have more speed this year.

speed wise:
jantz>arnaud
trelle>Arob
'11 recievers> '10 receivers... (only lost williams and franklin who weren't burners)

that will help our YPC i would have to imagine. its also tough to not make mistakes when you constantly have to grind out 10 play drives.

i hated those 10 play drives ending on our own 42 yard line!!!!!

Call me optomistic, but there is NO way UNI can afford to stack the box all day against us. We have a much better passer/scrambler, and a stable full of RB / WR to make us way to hard to be as predictable as we have been. Not to mention having about +50lbs per position at our OL, compared to their DL.

Bartender, another glass of koolaide please, and make it a double, on the double.

I expect a big game from Jantz on the ground. UNI is going to scheme to take away Shontrelle and not get beat deep. They are going to force Jantz to be patient passing...but I have a feeling that Jantz will scramble and burn their LBs for some big gains.

I think this coaching staff has a lot of confidence in Jantz and I wouldn't be surprised if we take some early shots down the field. If UNI stacks the line I think the coaching staff will be more than happy to throw it down the field. This will not be the cyclone offense of the last few years.

Didnt help us last year or Iowa in 2009.....these kids are players and want to see their highlights on espn....well guess what, a FCS team beats a BCS team and they just might get that shot....

However, your first comment regarding the scrambler/passer got me thinking u might have hit the weapon on the head.....play action to RB which front 7 crashing on the RB and Steele rolls out with run/pass option with wr/te drag routes across the middle.

Somehow or someway were gonna get steel in space to show off that speed. AND somehow someway were going to get them out of their base package....do not be surprised cyclone fans if u see ISU start 4 wr, 5 ol, qb and rb....spread them out - if they stay in base 4-3 then hit whichever wr is covered by a lb. If the rotate into a 4-2-5 then run it at them.....

In order for us to be successful, we have to establish a running game somehow - and i think it will come as the result of our passing game softening that middle. Those LB will be staying in to protect the run. If Collin was still here he would have a field day across the middle.....there will be passing seams, if steele can hit them we should move the ball.

A lot of pressure will be riding on steele we will see what we got from the first series...he moves this team down and scores...the team will have a huge momentum swing that could last weeks!!!!!

As bad as ISU was against UNI last year, I think the fact that Tiller was playing and that even though the offense stunk the Clones were in control of the game, had a lot to do with the offensive output. UNI obviously stacked the line of scrimmage to stop the run and CPR did not want to take any chances with turnovers that might have sparked UNI.

At some point in time this offense is going to have to show that it is capable of passing vertically to make teams back off the line of scrimmage. Until they do that the running game, short passes and bubble screens are not going to be very effective.

I agree with all of that. ARob had a great burst through the hole (TTU and NIU long runs), and had slightly better top-end speed than most give him credit for, but was never going to win a track meet. Shontrelle really showed his speed in the TTU game. He will hopefully lead to more big plays running the ball. I really like what Standard and Nealy could bring, but both will get their chances next year. Johnson (jr), Woody (jr), Nealy (fr), Standard (fr), Hollis (so), and White (jr) in the backfield next year?!?! Someone is going to have to change position. That's too many schollies @ 1 position and they would have time to learn the new position and still have a couple years to contribute.

EXACTLY.....been saying it since Chizik was here....to get that stack jacked.....play action and throw over the top to the outside...even if it fails, the chances are it changes the first three steps of the safetys which can/could be the difference maker....

I hated watching highlights of Sash and Greenwood watching arnaud throw the ball knowing all along where he was going with it...the guys were all in front of them...it was easy to anticipate the routes, they even said so in interviews....had a little to do with arnaud and a lot to do with the schemes not challenging them over the top.

Throw over the top a couple of times and that defense will stop walking to the line on every snap or risk bein burnt!!!!

I think they lost their leading tackler from last season who was a linebacker.

Heres what i think of UNI - i think i would rather be playing UNLV or Minnesota then UNI....everyone always talks about ISU looking at Iowa as their superbowl and we always say no no no....

Well after UNI lost at iowa two years ago their players said it on camera....it was their time to shine....how serious do you think they approach that game???

I hope ur right and we walk all over them, but, unless Steele is that much better then Arnaud and Tiller, this game will be close and only because our defense is better then last year when it should have given up 17 points.

final score 51-14....kiddin....

Final score - ISU 24 UNI 16

Then we fundamentally disagree. If ISU doesn't blow them out by at least 30, I'm going to be disappointed.

Our offensive line should give Steele a chance to get comfortable. While he is getting accustomed to D-1 ball in the first two series, Herman will probably favor the run.
