Would keeping him one more year really make us the laughing stock of the conference? Really? I know I'll still be going to as many games as I can next year no matter who is the coach. I think most fans feel the same way.
Please explain how keeping him will make us more like Iowa? If anything letting him go makes us look exactly like Iowa. Next thing you know, Mac is winning games at some mid-major again and everyone will be scratching their heads like the Hawkeyes are right now. I'm not saying that Mac is the answer, I'm just not convinced letting him go is the answer.
Starting over from scratch pretty much guarantees a few years of mediocre basketball if not more. Realistically, we can't make that splashy hire that can turn a program around in a year or 2, but we do have a foundation there that hopefully can take us to the next level. Recruiting isn't a one year thing, it takes years to develop and it seems we have the inroads for that now. Will it pan out? Who knows? But it's better than starting from scratch IMO.
Again, I think he will be back next year.
We are 11th in the league in Greg's fourth year. Nebraska will be better next year, will we? We used Brackins to get on the ESPN family this year a few times. How many ESPN games (national television) do we get next year? That may be regardless of the coach, we have nothing to sell.
How many season tickets do you think we will sell next year if Greg is indeed the coach. You are now seeing the women's team outdrawing the men, and it will get worse. 6500 people in Hilton is a big revenue loss.
Also, if Greg wins at the mid major level, it will prove what many believe, that he is a good mid major coach. I think the guy is a solid game planner myself.
Finally, the reason it is so bad is that people have lost hope. That contract depresses so many people, not because they don't like Greg, because they are tired of watching this team lose the same way over and over again.
Hope sells tickets. Iowa State fans will be back, but they need hope for it to get better. I don't see how Greg McDermott sells that hope.
