Not often you look to Utah as a trend setter and it's not that I believe this will spread across the nation. But it would sure be nice if it did - and spread outside of state employees.

Many other countries have shorter work weeks, a lot more vacation, etc. Maybe it's our turn to get with it.

This issue is starting to be discussed in many governmental agencies in Iowa, because of what Utah has done. I would assume a lot of other states have also taken notice and will research the issue as well.

Unfortunately, outside of municipalities, every minute you're closed (for most business) is a minute you can't make a dollar. It's perfect for municipalities though, where you are on a fixed budget. Every minute you're not there is a dollar saved. I know my company would love to have us work 7 days a week, so I don't see it happening here anytime soon.

Now, do the school systems then follow this 4 day week also to save electricity and what not for school buildings?

If so, then when down the road do people come along and say these 4 days of school and 3 days off are making kids more obese because it gives them one whole day extra to sit around and play video games?

I could get in line for this kind of policy. Then again, this comes from somebody that already has an AWS (M-Th I work 9 hours, and every other Friday I work 8 with the other one being off)

The problem for my particular nook of government is that people expect to be able to transact business on Fridays so I don't forsee this ever happening.

I may be wrong, but I thought the City of Boone did something like this years ago. Seems they were either closed really early in the day and/or had an extra day off each week.

I would have no problem working 4-10 hour days.

I just accepted a new job with this work schedule. I'm greatly looking forward to having a 3 day weekend every other week.

I am a state employee and pray that Iowa follow this trend. I commute 25 miles and figure it would save over $400.00 a year in gas.

Uh, yeah. The French work around 30 hours a week. Too bad they can't afford to pay for all of their entitlement programs now.

I'm all for that! In fact, let's let government workers have an 8 hour work week. Disclaimer: that is assuming that they do not receive the other 32 in vacation pay.
