I’m seeing a lot of people with your viewpoint. Did you watch GOT? Curious if you felt the same way when Ned Stark died?
I read those books so not exactly the same for me. The number of characters the story had even in season one was significantly higher.

Honestly when I first played the game I had a similar reaction to his death where it was just wtf I'm not sure I want to keep playing. I think I might have even taken a short break from it. But then I figured this is the story they've decided to tell, let's just see where it goes. Turned out to be pretty damn good. Still one of the most shocking moments I've ever experienced in a video game.

The Last of Us 2 and RDR2 are two video games that absolutely shocked me.

I did watch GoT but Ned wasn’t anything like Joel in terms of likability for me. I’m gonna keep watching for sure but I don’t really care about many of the characters. That can change.

I wonder how much more screentime he has this season, with him being their biggest star I'm guessing they find a lot of ways to keep Joel in the story.

Dunno. I saw an interview with Pedro yesterday that said the only reason he took the role was because they told him he would be killed off. He is busy as hell with so many projects.

The game delves heavy into flashbacks, and we’ve seen clips in trailers with Joel that haven’t been seen yet. I wouldn’t be surprised if there is a lot of onscreen Pedro yet. They have 5 full years of context to fill in…

The military training thing is always funny to me. People really question tactics 22 years after there has been no formal military training!? How many survivors even served, and how old are they now? It’s just such a completely bizarre scenario that I find it funny that people think they could adapt and perfect every single military best practice 20+ years after an apocalypse. When every single “thing” we take for granted in terms of resourcing and travel and health and just basic human interaction and rule of law and anything and everything - turned completely upside down. It’s unfathomable. It would honestly be like a new planet. I can say with certainty that there is no possible way I would recognize myself in 22 years IF a fungus zombie infection takes over the world today.

I didn’t read the books before season 1, so Ned’s death was the single most shocking event in TV history to me. But that also made it my favorite TV show, because anything was on the table (plus the writing, character development, and White Walker mystery were top notch). Never once did I think “I’m done with this show”.

I read all the GOT books between seasons 1-3, so I knew the Red Wedding was coming. That episode was more of an anxiety watch for me than shock.

I haven’t played TLoU2, but was unfortunately spoiled via a gaming thread last year, so I knew this was coming too. Same deal here where it was more anxiety than surprise

I'm a complete sucker for a story that's willing to kill off main characters. We've all watched so many scenes trying to build tension and completely failing because you know they won't do it. After Ned dies it changes the way you feel watching every other scene where a character is in danger.

The thing that gets me about shows like this, and I know that I'm supposed to suspend my disbelief... but when they flat out say that they have vets in the population, why do they always do such unmilitary things when it comes to their defense?

The only thing the zombies can do is melee combat. If your defense against that is fire, why are your walls made of wood??? Why are there no murder holes at ground level for the defenders to poke spears through? If you have flamethrowers, why are there no pillboxes to protect them? Why haven't their patrols tried to loot machine guns from nearby military installations? So many things in their defense just make zero sense.
Uhh… they were struggling to even clear their sewer line of roots and keep their buildings warm. It’s a stretch to expect so many resources and labor be spent on defense.

Their city defense was actually pretty good.

I get that-- but how much labor and resources were spent on that wall in the first place? They could have put the same effort into smarter defenses.

That was a pretty damn good wall under the circumstances. They don’t have unlimited construction materials, equipment or a contractor to build a perfect modern defense.
