On that cruise we were just on, they had unlimited grilled lobster tail for every lunch & dinner (buffet dining, not the main dining room). I'm not a big fan of lobster, but Lew ate so much I was waiting for him to grow claws & feelers/antennae (not sure what they call those things on lobsters)!

Lobsters have both antennae and antennules. The claws are chelae.

Etiquette question:

When you are a guest in someone's house is it okay to kick their dog? If so, how hard of a kick is allowed?

Backstory:

Invited to friends house for get together on Memorial Day. They have 3 dogs including 2 yippy, kicking size dogs. One is extremely high strung and while I have my hands full carrying food in the house comes up behind me and nips me pretty hard in the calf. Luckily, it is cool and rainy and I have jeans on. Mrs. Hostess apologizes about it and takes the dog out of the room. I go out on porch and sit out there. When it is time to eat I come back in to kitchen. Dog waits until I have a half full plate of food and then sneaks up behind me and nips me twice in the calves. Mrs. Hostess this time scolds dog and puts him in kennel. I go back out to porch to stay away from less than friendly host animal. After everyone has eaten and had dessert - maybe 90 minutes later I go back in to pitch in cleaning up. Dog is again out of kennel and nips me again when my back is turned. Mrs. Hostess apologizes again and takes dog away. She has no idea why it is picking on me and no one else. When Mrs. Hostess is gone other guest confides in me that on another visit dog bit her. She says Host family knows but doesn't know that when she got home she discovered that the dog had drawn blood. So is it okay for me to place a short but well placed kick next time? Not that I am sure I will go back in their house if that mutt isn't contained.

I'm very glad I didn't make a scene at the time. Mrs. Velo told me after we left that Mrs. Hostess informed her that she has breast cancer and that she would be having surgery the next week.
Kicking is not okay. It will only make the little bastard more sneaky when it bites you. My suggestion would be to politely request that the dog remain kenneled or behind a closed door when you are there as it seems to dislike you. If they cannot (or will not) do that, suggest that any future get-togethers be at your house or a neutral site like a restaurant. IMO, her health is no reason to let her dog bite her guests. One hiss out of a cat, and it's closed up in the bedroom when we have visitors. That's not much of a problem for us though because most of our cats hide whenever strangers are in the house.

Until I read that last line, I was going to suggest you kick both the dog and the hostess.

Warning: Youth Soccer Update...

Spent the whole weekend at a soccer tournament where both son and daughter played. Yes, daughter finally got officially cleared Friday to return to full play.

Son's team had first game Saturday at 0730. Kids played like they weren't awake yet. HC talked to them about winning being fun and all but what we really want to see is improvement - win or lose. We saw regression Saturday morning. Had another game Saturday afternoon and played better but got beat. Team down one goal in final minute when they earned a corner kick. Son (not a very good player) remembered direction and set up on back side on corner of the 18 (penalty box) and got the ball coming through the box. He dodged two defenders and got a decent shot off but was just wide. I told him how proud I was of him that he remembered where to be and what to do without needing to remind him. Making that shot would have done him a world of good (with himself and his teammates - there hasn't been a lot of affection for him on this team), but what he did still lifted his spirits and confidence a lot. I even heard a couple of unsolicited "good jobs" from his teammates. Maybe all hope is not lost for 11 year old boys... Boys Sunday game was cancelled because apparently other team from South Dakota registered but never showed up. I'm just glad that we weren't supposed to play them Saturday morning. We saw other team warming up for quite a while then leave. If there is anything worse than playing an 0730 game it would be showing up for an 0730 game and then not getting to play.

Daughter made her debut with her team late morning on Saturday. Our parents gave her a rousing ovation when she came in the game. We were surprised that new coach put her in at forward (4-4-2 formation). She can play everywhere but apparently he told her that he likes her there. We expected her at defender or midfield. First game was against another local team that includes two girls who used to play with her on a traveling team and are classmates and teammates at her school. Won 1-0. After games teams award one opposing player a player of the game award. The two classmates brought it over to my daughter for her 9 month return from injury*. What a class move! Second game got moved from field to field to field due to running behind on the schedule. They won 3-0 in the waning light and daughter scored easy goal as keeper made save but ball deflected right down goal line for her to tap in. Warmed my heart to hear her teammates cheering extra loud for the comeback kid. They won Sunday game 4-0 so they made the championship game which they lost 3-1. So glad that she made it back.

*Classmates shared that the coach told them after the game that they knew that daughter's team was good before and now "they got that girl back from her ACL and she is really good". Daughter hasn't always gotten along with these girls but they have been really supportive of her on her come back.

I wouldn't but it is fun to dream...

Hostess is always very nice, but I'm not sure why she doesn't get that the dog needs to learn not to bite or stay kenneled when guests are present.

Still didn't buy a new mower. As much as I would rather have a rider, I guess I should go with a self propelled on so I at least keep walking. Toro has a good range of those. They even have a 30 inch self propelled for about the price of a cheap rider.
That's essentially a 50% wider cutting path.

Buy a house with a bigger garage and a smaller lawn.

FTW!

I was curious to see how what percentage of the US was male/female. I found one that broke it down by state. Iowa is 49/51 and Minny is 50/50 (sorry boxster, you have longer odds up there than us in Iowa). Wyoming and North Dakota are 51/49, so that is where the single ladies have the best chance.

The interesting state......Wisconsin. It is 50/51. I am unsure how this happens that you have 101%. Maybe drunk Sconies marking both female and male?
With the oil boom, I'm surprised ND is that close. I guess enough strippers have moved in.

When I built my house (2005), I had the plumber use polybutylene pipe, and each line comes to a large manifold on the wall in the mechanical room. You can shut off any line you like, and they are all labeled.

Bonus: Pressure stays the same all the time, and if someone flushes the toilet while you're in the shower, you don't get scalded.

Nice. Likie!

My gas lines are all off a manifold with shut offs, wish the water was.
