Many are not going to like this idea, but Iowa State womens basketball would be well served to announce Billy as interim head coach (along side Bill where he would demonstrate his in game coaching abilities) as Addy and Audi head into their senior years and then let him assume the head coaching position the following year (with Bill retiring and court being named after him).
This would allow for recruiting continuity (which Billy already plays a lead role) and a smooth transition similar to Iowa.
An external replacement would be a challenged to keep a team together and likely be one of two things:
1) spend big money for a seasoned coaches (unlikely) ..: remember, women’s basketball operates at a loss (loses money)..
2)a long period of mediocrity (at best) and many players transferring.

Feel feee to move this post to a better thread that I may not be aware of (or a new thread)
If the long term goal is to elevate the program post-Bill, you don't do this.

As Otz demonstrated, a new WBB HC who isn't on the current staff can quickly rebuild the program even if the transfer rules a couple of years from now are tightened up (e.g. no more than one transfer without sitting out a season).

And Otz also clearly demonstrates the need for Bill's replacement to have prior HC experience. I am guessing the conversation for Billy to seek and obtain a HC job elsewhere (like Otz did) has taken place. Since that hasn't been done, that takes Billy off the replacement list or moves him significantly down the list.

Bill could have helped Billy’s chances of getting the job had he delegated some of the in game coaching like TJ does with his staff. Billy’s recruiting has been solid, but too many believe his lack of head coaching experience is a real concern. A bigger role on game day may have reduced those concerns.
also the idea that nepotism hired almost never work out. but it's a moot point until BF announces a date

At this point I don’t think Billy has any interest in being a HC. I think he just wants to work with his dad

Billy would not be a candidate for a head coaching position at any other power 4 school. On the other side of the coin there is probably no other potential candidate that understands the ISU WBB program more than Billy.

Steyer would be better than Billy If you absolutely had to go internal

Why would you say this? There are lots of assistants with track records like his that get P4 jobs.

IMO Jamie has a pretty good idea what it takes to be a head coach at Iowa State at this point in his career. And in the case of an assistant coach at Iowa State, have inside information whether that assistant is ready to be an Iowa State HC.

As a fan, who doesn't see the inner workings of the WBB team, I would have concerns about Billy since he doesn't have a HC resume to show prior success. Even with TJ leaving Iowa State and having success as HC at SDSU, I still think most fans (myself included) had concerns about TJ after his mediocre record at UNLV (29-30).

Shows what I know and maybe proves "inside information" is more important than prior HC record. I trust Jamie!
