Promoting Messingham to OC was a mistake

You could change the system, but it will probably be worst than what we've seen so far this year. Tom H is a top 50 OC IMO in the nation. He is an above avg playcaller, he has only been an OC for 6 years since he started at Rice and that is counting this year at OSU. So he is still learning and why would've the god of the spread offense, Urban Meyer, signed him? Its cause he knows how good of a teacher he is.From what I've seen an heard he is a very good qb coach. I know that Braxton Miller is a great ath but Tom H will make this kid a heisman winner. I dont agree with coach mess as the OC, CPR should've hire somebody like Coach Gruden(i wish we could have him) but he has a great gig at MNF an he probably wont go for a position other than HC for a lot of money. Gruden knows how to teach and simplify a qb mechanics and he is very very good at teaching a qb in reading a defense and making progressions. Dont believe me watch Gruden's camp wt qbs in espn. All Isu football program needs is somebody like this. I know coach Mess played qb in uni, but he is not embodying wt the qb and his playcalling has been bad. Saturday was a day to throw 50 screens. Why ?since the o line was getting trolled and SJ couldnt get in rthyme, as a OC you want to get that ball out in space quick. This keeps the d line honest, you get a few yards, maybe break a big one, and your qb gets confident. FYI some threads were saying CPR and Tom H clashed. True last year agaisnt OU CPR grabbed the headset(while the camera was focused in CPR's face) and clearly said: run the damn ball!!!!

In the second half we went to a formation with two backs that was a big improvement on our scoring drive. Of course, then we stopped running it for some reason. I think we should lose the zone read as either it has been diagnosed or we just are not good at running it. I would like to see more of the two back set or pistol formation so that the running back is actually moving when he gets the ball.

I think Mangino is more of a buffet eater.

Nah... he made good money in coaching and I am sure that 99% of his earnings is budgeted for food. The other 1% is budgeted to the tarp company that custom made his windbreakers.

The play calling saturday was bad, but our Oline needs to block a hell of a lot better. I feel if plays have time to develop and have better protection well we are a better offensive team.

There have been a lot of mediocre college QB's that became famous because they had a dominant o-line in front of them.

Just look across the state at Brad Banks for a prime example of this...

Western Illinois was not a good offensive game. We couldn't even sit the starters until well into the 4th quarter.

Our offense currently ranks 90th in the nation out of 120 teams. If you like that, then so be it. I guess you have low standards. The defense ranks 18th. Without an 18th ranked defense, we'd be in a world of hurt right now.

We ran the starters for one drive in the 2nd half.

I'm very disappointed with what Mess has done far, and his promotion very well could be a mistake, but you're still one of the biggest dip***** on this site.

While I am frustrated as most, it is premature to throw Mess under the bus. Sure, there is a relationship there with Rhoads, but I believe as a 'CEO', Rhoads will not sit idly by. Think that is why Herman is gone in the first place, Wells & Mess switched beforehand, etc. Jantz was brought in to 'up' the competition at quarterback, and I believe that is commonplace throughout the whole team at every position. Think that same mentality applies to the coaching staff. Has anyone been added in the past year to the staff at a 'lesser' position that would be pushing others? Hmmmmm...

Not saying is would happen mid-season, but the thought process is the same - the best man for the position. Think this is how Rhoads has shown he operates.

I think you might be onto something here.

I love Paul Rhoads, and I hope he stays at ISU for a very long time. He has made tremendous strides with this program.

However, he made a mistake IMO when he promoted Messingham to OC after the departure of Herman. Herman ended up being a mistake hire as well, but I liked it when it happened because I really thought he would be good, so Rhoads gets a pass on that one.

But... ISU was a HORRIBLE offense every single year under Tom Herman. Not just below average, we were awful offensively. Our offense under Herman was just painful to even watch.

I think a lot of fans were like me when we first heard Tom Herman was leaving.... good riddance! It was time to ditch that awful offensive scheme and bring someone in that knew how to move the football and score points. But instead, we promote Messingham and announce that the offense wouldn't really be changing much at all. And if anything, it would become even more vanilla and simpler under Messingham.... which boggled my mind because I already thought our offense was ridiculously predictable and boring.

So we are getting basically exactly what I figured we'd be getting. Yes, we are 3-1, but the offense only had one good game and that was against Tulsa. The offense nearly cost us the Iowa game, and it did cost us the TT game. It wasn't even good against Western Illinois.

So yes, Steele Jantz isn't really that good of a QB. But, as some have said, he's a square peg that we're trying to fit into a round hole. He can't run the zone read play at all. It's just ugly. And his passes are too inaccurate, so opposing defenses just stack the box. It's what Rutgers did to us in the bowl game, and I'm surprised that every team doesn't do it against us? I'd make Steele throw on every down. Barnett too. He can't throw either.

But this offense we run is pathetic IMO. When you are on the half yard line and you have your QB standing 7 yds behind the line of scrimmage handing it off to a RB who is at a complete standstill, that is a horrible offense. Sorry, it just is. And when your QB fakes the handoff to the RB up the middle, and then follows that same RB right into the hole... that is just plain stupid. You fake the ball up the middle to draw the defense to that RB, so why then follow him right into the pursuit? Steele does this all the time. It drives me insane!

The one play that has somewhat seemed to work for us this year is the WR bubble screen. But then against TT, we never run it. TT brings 8 guys up in the box and sends almost all of them up the gut at us, but we refuse to exploit the edges on them with the quick WR screen to the outside. And we refuse to exploit the area vacated by the blitzing LB's right over the middle with a quick slant to the TE.

I just can't hardly stomach watching this offense anymore. I wanted a new direction when Herman left, but no, I guess we were satisfied with his offense that was consistently one of the worst in the nation year after year.

At this point, I say start Steele this week and if he struggles early, then yank him. Bring in Barnett. And if he can't get anything going, then give Richardson a shot. I'm sick and tired of this "Richardson is just too young" BS. I've seen plenty of young QBs do well in college.

And if none of our QB's can get this awful scheme to work, then you have to replace Mess I'm afraid. The Mess Offense pretty much would perfectly describe this offense. It's a mess alright.

your posts are a mistake.

Eight more games left to prove our OC knows what he is doing...I am surprised aty oihow basic our plays are. I am surprised that Jantz exited stage right so much only to find no receivers downfield to throw to. I am surprised that Jantz had more carries than the other running backs combines. I am surprised Jantz and Tiller did so little in the game. I am surprised we did same old, same old for the whole game. I am surprised we do not have more reverses or throwbacks. I was pleasantly surprised Jevon Miller did a good job on kick returns although having a running back in the spot might make more sense. I cannot fathom how we could only get three yards passing in a half. I do not understand why Mess went up to the booth to watch over this offensive mess.

Will CPR go to the bench and replace Mess with Sturdy or Jantz with Barnett first? WSU Did not win a lot of games when Sturdy was there, but their offense sure moved the ball.

I stand by my OP. Sorry if that offends anyone with blinders on that is in denial.

This offensive system has stunk since Tom Herman brought it here, and it still does. It's not really Mess's fault. He's just doing the same thing that was handed him when Herman left. And surprise, surprise... it still doesn't work.
