What were Coe's scrapes with the law that got him kicked off the team?

Coe was dismissed because he wouldn't go to class. He was a team cancer. We've discussed that. If you remember right, Iowa would not offer Coe a scholarship after JUCO because of his attitude/character. Not a legal issue. Rhoads had already given him a longer leash than anyone other than maybe Irving with his law troubles and it was effecting the entire team. It caused Jensen to quit. Anyway, Rhoads is not a saint for kicking a kid off the team who wouldn't go to class. That is not a disadvantage that ISU has against other schools.

I knew that Irving was dismissed from the team. Was not aware that Irving was expelled from Iowa State. Perhaps you could link that article. Were other students expelled as well?

Here's an article that says the 9 students involved would face possible expulsion, although I would guess that without a scholarship for the fall semester Irving just didn't come back anyway and the formal process was not required. I don't know though. http://www.iowastatedaily.com/sports/article_09eed81c-c1b2-11e3-9af6-001a4bcf887a.html

Interesting that you condemn me for not posting negativity about Iowa State Football and claim that I am spreading propaganda. And your constant negativity does NOT help Iowa State do well. It is just complaining. Other than complain, what do you do to help ISU football?

You can post whatever you want. What I see you doing is constantly arguing with posters about how nothing is actually Rhoads' fault. How he is so disadvantaged at ISU and how we can never expect more than 3 or 4 wins a year. How nothing that has gone wrong can be put on Rhoads, you can't blame anyone for anything. Just don't spew all that BS. Nevermind that Paul Rhoads has the best facilities relative to our piers that ISU has ever had. New $5 million scoreboard, new $23 million practice facility, new $50 million SEZ coming in to sell recruits, fans selling out games until the last 25% of a 5-19 run, ect. He'll get one more year for non football reasons, but it's a contract issue more than anything. And maybe he'll come out of nowhere and we'll go to a bowl, but I wouldn't bet on it and at this moment despite that being something that I desperately want.

I am not really interested in placing blame for our problems. You seem to think that firing Rhoads will solve all our problems. Name all the great successful football coaches we have had at Iowa State in the last 35 years.

Well that explains a lot. You constantly insist that people talking about the reality of ISU football is "not helping Iowa State", but you won't say it is hurting it either. That's because it doesn't matter! It is irrelevant. None of this matters. It's a message board for entertainment. You don't post facts or solid arguments to support your opinions, you just spout off about how bad ISU historically is and how we will always be that bad no matter the coach so let's just keep Rhoads. I'm not going to take a vow of silence for an entire year while our coach is a lame duck just because you think it's "not helping Iowa State".

You said Irving was expelled from ISU. Irving was dismissed from the ISU Football Team. Completely different from being expelled from ISU.

As far as Coe is concerned. Coe was an Iowa recruit that did not qualify academically. At that time Coe was a Running Back. Coe outgrew his position and became a Defensive End and potentially a Defensive Tackle at Iowa Western. I have yet to hear that it was character issues that led to Iowa not recruiting him. IMO, it had more to do with him not qualifying originally with grades and position change. Iowa State has had recruits not qualify academically. In general, when they have issues with academically not qualifying as a signed commitment Iowa State moves on and does not offer them again. So it is an academic issue.

I have repeatedly said that the decision has been made that CPR will coach Iowa State Football next fall. So just quit with the constant Rhoads should be fired talk. Take a chill pill and see how next season turns out. Pollard will make a decision after next season.

You have NO IDEA as to what our record will be this next fall. You admit that. Yet you constantly post how our football team is hopelessly lost if Rhoads is our coach. All I have said is that complaining does NOT help. The negativity does not help. The reality of ISU football is that we have had two poor seasons and the coaching staff is trying to get some impact recruits to help our team. The jury is out whether they will be the solution or not. So all I am saying is to sit back and WAIT to see how the season develops.

Firing Rhoads will not necessarily lead to improvement in our football program. Understand that we have fired many coaches since Earle Bruce left us for Ohio State over 35 years ago. We seem to be still looking for our long term coach. And the jury is still out on CPR. Can he get this program back on track or not? None of us know for sure.

We now have improvements that at least bring us closer to our competition in the Big 12. Improvements that most of our competition has had for years. That will help.

I don't mind constructive criticism of our football team. Fine. But the constant talk that we are going to suck again this fall and the constant repeating that Rhoads needs to be fired, repeated ad nauseam, just needs to stop.

Irving would have been expelled most likely if not for him leaving the school first because he was kicked off. It took an incident that bad for Rhoads to boot him. That's the point.

Find where I said he should be fired right now. I have only talked about Rhoads' performance as a coach. If not for his long contract I believe he would be fired right now, but the reality is he has a sweetheart deal that precludes us from doing that and the SEZ will pull in enough attendance next year to help Rhoads keep his job.

You keep saying complaining doesn't help ISU, but you won't say how much it hurts. Because it doesn't. Your whole thing is so ridiculous even you won't admit to it.

It is possible to think Rhoads has been absolutely horrible the past 2 years and still know the reality that he won't be fired before the season.

And what evidence do you have that we will be better? I've heard a lot of BS and smoke blown up my *** the past two years about these teams and I'll choose to believe that our team will be good when I see it myself.

It is Paul Rhoads' job to evaluate young men and decide if they will be good representatives of ISU and their behavior is ultimately his responsibility.

CPR has not been able to get enough high character talent at ISU, so he had to take chances on some questionable character type guys who were more talented and less coveted by others. If he was better at his job, he wouldn't have to do that as much. That's a fact. He kept Irving on the team after he assaulted his girlfriend, kept Coe on the team for a long long time after skipping classes and made special concessions for him. And then he tried to bring him back as a walkon after he was kicked off the team.

I'm sure Bevins was just homesick *eyeroll*. Was Charlie Rogers homesick too? What happened there? What about his decision to sign Devron Moore? He never even made it to campus. There are so many guys that CPR has brought on that have just been absolute disasters and while some circumstances are a little unfortunate, that's still on CPR. TJ Mucherson is in the same mold. Talented player who CPR has had trouble getting to buy in to the system and the effort he needs to put forth. Devlyn Cousin has a domestic assault case he's dealing with as well.

Your willful ignorance is embarrassing.

How good is Paul Rhoads at his job if he can't consistently get football players on his team that go to class, practice at the level they should, and not break the law?

You think David Irving just changed his character and the way he carried himself when he stepped onto campus? Coe too? Does CPR do any fact checking or background checks on his players' personalities?

Well. I think Paul needs to try harder on the recruiting trail like Fred does. 2012 was the year to get better players. Now he is in crash mode to survive as a head coach.

So you don't know of any issues that these guys had before they signed with Iowa State? You made it sound like they were apparent.
My guess is we had the book on Coe and we gambled because we had no better prospects. That is why we need better coaches for recruiting. Thew more I see is we better get better at developing players quicker or we need more talent on the lines. You can have all the receivers and qbs and rbs and dbacks you want, but if you fail to recruit oline/dline people of quality, you do not have more than two wins a year. Ten less points and we would have been winless.

Well. I think Paul needs to try harder on the recruiting trail like Fred does. 2012 was the year to get better players. Now he is in crash mode to survive as a head coach.

Agree. It seems like when Rhoads really wants to go out and get some players, he is able to.

Look at this year. We are desperate for some interior DL guys, and he goes out and lands Tucker and Leath both. I believe these are the #5 and #6 JUCO DT's in the country.

Where was this kind of recruiting the last couple of years? It just seems like we didn't go out and make the same kind of recruiting effort the last few years, and it's showing big time. You can't wait until your job is on the line to put forth the effort. It's too late then.

You have to do what Fred does. Recruit over guys. Don't promise anyone anything. Fred is constantly recruiting over guys, and creating a massive competition on the team for playing time, and if you're not good enough, he won't play you and then you have to decide if you want to sit on the bench, get in the gym and improve your game (Naz Long), or transfer out (SDW).

And if you transfer out, then good luck to you, and we'll just go get someone better to replace you with (Deonte Burton). That's Fred's approach. Coaches like Fran and Rhoads try to appease players it seems, and basically give them playing time just so they won't quit or transfer. That will not lead to success.

I think what Fred has done that is imperative for CPR is that when he takes a risk, he does not let it blow up in his face. He creates a culture where these guys can straighten out and/or stay out of trouble.

I fully understand the need to be aggressive and maybe take some questionable character type guys who are a little riskier, but you have to do everything in your power to make sure that doesn't blow up in your face and that has been an issue here.

You have a right to your opinion. What coach out there, who will be here long term, can consistently, year in, year out, win 6 games with our schedule and geographical/recruiting disadvantages? Who is your man?

If Rhoads only wins 4 games next year he has definitely proven he can't get it done any more. People were saying the same thing about McCarney and the same thing about McDermott. There are coaches out there who can get it done. Pollard needs to do his job and go find one if his current one can't.

And people get SO stuck on "being here long term". Well, how about we just start off with someone who can get it done in the first place? If you have a solid program built, you can succeed across multiple coaches provided they aren't leaving super early. They don't have to be there 10 years.

Well, if those complaining that in year 6-7 we are not in a bowl for the last 6 straight years, then indirectly you are making the statement that there are coaches, given that tenure at ISU, that should be getting it done. I'd love to know who that coach is, whether it be 4 straight years or 7? WHO is your man? Help Jamie out since it's so easy man.

As many have said, you don't have to know who will work, when you know who won't. Unless you just assume we can't do any better at ISU. If that's the case you might as well pack it in and I'm sure the donors would too.

Otherwise, it's worth a chance. It's a total straw man argument.

I hope Rhoads gets it done, but if he isn't, then you have to give someone else a shot.

Oh, I agree next year is huge. I'd be shocked if we go bowling, but honestly, Who do we get? And if you are JP, then you damned well better have a short list now!

It's a great question. I would love to see Rhoads get it done, but I'm doubtful at this point. I hope that I'm wrong.

With a new hire, I think we need to try something different. I don't have a name, but I think going with an FCS head coach might be the way to go, someone hungry. It is going to take someone hungry.

Explain to me the theory of relativity.

If you can't explain it, it can't be real, right?

I am not a professional coach finder. Doesn't mean someone getting paid hundreds of thousands of dollars per year to do so can't.

Do you really believe that there is not one coach in the entire nation that would come coach ISU that could succeed?

Anyone can *****. But relative to normal fans, intelligent fans provide solutions. I was just sure you could answer what appears by your comments, to be an easy answer.
