If you have been following the bring back baseball threads that closely, you probably should remember that JP has stated on multiple instances that Title 9 is not an issue to adding baseball back at ISU, it is just an AD funding issue.
you hit it on the head, it is not title 9, though some can argue that it did have something to do with it, but it was clearly a budget issue at the time baseball and men's swimming were cut. They would have been knee deep in **** if they would have chosen to cut women's sports, but that's a different scenario. If we had the same money now as we did back when it was cut, they probably would still be around. As far as the Olympic issue and wrestling getting cut, wrestling is one of the top sports for men in the NCAA that has been cut over the past decade. I hate to see it go, but the lack of growth and interest seem to play a huge role, along with any ratings, to cut the sport.

Well this isn't until 2020 so there is still time for college to drop it first. With the way conference expansion is moving, there hasn't been much care of whether the sport survives. Outside of the Big10, OSU and several NE schools there isn't a big draw for it.

10 years ago I wouldn't believe that ISU would drop wrestling and now I'm not so sure. If the Big12 ever drops Wrestling (it was pretty close until WV joined), l can see ISU following. We are already at the low numbers for the number of sports we participate in. If wrestling no longer counts on that list it may be hard to keep it if we have another round of budget issues.

Lol what budget issues?

ISU will never add another mens' sport. Not until Title 9 is repealed so just stop. Why do you always come in and post this same sentiment?

False, JP has been on record saying that we are Title 9 compliant and that we could bring back baseball and still be under compliance. It's just a not a smart business idea, because the start up costs are through the roof, and without numerous donations its pointless to bring back a "red" sport.

that is pathetic. Its hard to have tv ratings when they never show it on TV.

Maybe it will make the sport stronger.... but I'm hoping that they will add it back in at the next meeting.

Funny how they only have one spot. So many sports that they can kill, but they choose wrestling. What a bunch of tools.

No one wants to watch wrestling on TV, it is a horrible spectator sport.

Let's say I agree, group every "horrible" bad-for-TV spectator sports and cut them according to their world participation and Olympic history. You're going to eliminate 20-40 summer and winter Olympic events (let's stop calling them all sports) before wrestling even remotely enters the conversation.

To defend this decision is either ignorance, blatant trolling or some sick twisted love of cronyism.

I can't imagine fencing is a better spectator sport.

Unless we have a five event winter Olympics and a 7 event summer olympics the argument for cutting wrestling because people don't tune in to watch compared to watching regular programming is completely ridiculous.

...rhythmic gymnastics? trampoline?

Isuska is right. Shouldn't be cutting another original Olympic event. Really a bad, bad call by the Olympic Committee.

I would cut trampoline in a heartbeat if I was on the committee.

I am pretty meh about wrestling (grew up in a huge wrestling community, but never really got into it). I went to every Iowa-ISU match in Hilton during my college days and still usually watch that meet, but that's about it.

I still think this is a ridiculous decision by the committee. There should be some untouchable original sports that you just can't eliminate.

At the same time my reaction to pretty much every wrestling fan that is posting what they consider a ridiculous sports in this thread is - "Yeah I'd much rather watch that than wrestling" so I can kind of see where the committee is coming from. (Except the horse sports).

Also while browsing the list of current Olympic sports I learned that Trampolining is a sport. If the committee wants better ratings, why aren't they showing more girls jumping on trampolines?

I watched some fencing this year and enjoyed it. It just might be a better spectator sport than wrestling.

An argument between Wrestling vs. Fencing being cut would be a legitimate argument. Both are pretty widespread and have a long history.

But they weren't debating between Wrestling and Fencing. It was between Wrestling and "Modern Pentathlon", a sport that was made up 100 years ago and doesn't have 1/1,000 the participation level of wrestling.

I've gotta say, I would much rather watch Field Hockey than wrestling based on your gifs. It also looks like it's much more fun to play field hockey than it is to compete in wrestling. Is your gif of a wrestling match supposed to win the non-wrestlers over? I'll be honest, to me at least wrestling sounds cool in theory but is unappealing and boring to actually watch. Count me down as one who could flip a coin for Modern Pentathlon vs Wrestling and not care who wins.

Of which, if I heard correctly the head of the "Modern Pentathlon" is a member of the IOC. A lot of political hand wringing.

The horse presenting events, throwing a ball in the air while dancing, rich people sailing, modern pentathalon, curling, fencing...you really think these sports get people to turn off the hollywood movies, reality shows, sitcoms and other sports to watch the Olympics?

Half of these sports have no TV spectator value whatsoever other than cheering for your country, I'll admit for most people wrestling is one of them. So cut those sports according to their world participation, accessibility to every economic status, and history. You'd cut over half the Olympic sports before you got to wrestling.

To those who play devil's advocate or act like a contrarian on every issue, a lot of time you're just supporting corruption, irrational greed, or something that's simply the wrong thing to do.

So when you chose between olympic sports nobody cares about...why do you favor sports for the wealthy with drastically lower world participation than sports any nation and those of any economic status can compete in where over 25 nations around the globe have very recently won medals?

Get over if wrestling is fun to watch/good for ratings or not. It's a dumb decision unless we're going to a 10 sport Olympics.

settle down doofus. I haven't said anything about bringing back baseball in a very long time. But without Olympic funding wrestling is now going to die off. Its already struggling. Trust me i'm just as upset about this as everyone else, but there is nothing I can do about it, and nothing you can do about it, so its beneficial to the University to start looking around at some things.

And its not Title IX's fault. Only ignorant rednecks point to Title IX and scream about it, its the way Title IX is interpreted not written that is the problem.
Exactly, but how does that give it a free pass? The fact is that interpretation is now law as precedented in numerous lawsuits. Unless you repeal Title IX and rewrite a new piece of legislation, nothing changes.

Agreed with this.

I have little interest in wrestling, and all of those other sports 'on the bubble' honestly interest me more.

That said, how some of the equestrian events are still olympic sports is beyond me.
