dm is in an area that just says 'wintry mix'.....i assume that between the 14" area and the 8" area will have something other than a 'wintry mix'?

The NWS DSM office is calling for 9-12 inches of snow tomorrow night-Saturday for the Des Moines metro. From listening to my scanner, it sounds like there are power outages in the Boone area.

They are just using an all encompassing phrase there, it means Des Moines will deal with all different types of winter precip, by late Thursday it should be all snow though

Here's my trick to driving in bad weather. I'll tell you guys, but you've got to swear to keep it a secret...

You drive slow.

That's it. You don't have to drive the speed of everyone else. If you must, you can to to the right lane with your hazards on to show people that you're driving slow.

There you go, but be very quiet about it!

Sound advice. As long as the idiots who are driving fast don't take you with them. That's always my biggest fear when driving in really bad weather.

Looks like Cedar Rapids isn't going to get much for snow (at least compared to the western part of the state). If I have to miss Christmas Eve at my grandparents in Atlantic for the first time in my life, I'd at least like to have something to show for it.

Is it bad that I'm getting jealous of the areas that are going to have several feet of snow?

That's the thing, you can crawl along at 5mph from here to wherever your going and it'll be all well and good, but it just takes one numbnuts to screw everything up.

Too true. A bunch of us went down to florida right after graduation in dec 07. Unfortunately for us, we hit a major snowstorm starting when we hit eastern iowa and all the way as we drove straight south through illinois. We started our drive at around 5pm (we all had spent the previous summer working a job that had us driving nights, so we were used to it) and it took forever and ever to get through illinois going very, very slowly the entire time. At some point we ended up with this same car for a good stretch of the road... and all of a sudden at one point, they hit the side wall on a bridge. Scary stuff.

Two EPIC storms for Iowa... in the same month. They might as well go ahead and call this an EPIC winter.

It's a December to remember for sure.

Omaha is looking for 10-12 inches and 30 to 40 mile winds.

Just hope that things calm down going into january and february. December usually has nothing on Jan\Feb storms.

I see they now have Des Moines in the Winter Storm Warning now. We were under a Watch last night the last time I looked.

We've got 5 plus up here already. Someone can come scoop my driveway if you'd like.

As soon as I finish my coffee I'm going to start up my dad's snowblower and clear their driveway. If you live in West Lake Estates I suppose I can roll it over to your house and clear your driveway.

Guy at work came down to Urbandale from Ames and said it was good the whole way. Bit slippery in spots up in Ames.

Heading to Dubuque around noonish, from DSM. Probably safest route is I80 to Ia City, 380 to CR and 151 up to Dubuque. (sounds like Waterloo got hit pretty good yesterday? Not sure of the hihwy 96/US 63 route through Gladbrook and Traer)

Anyone got some reports for that route? Current and/or what's expected early afternoon?

TIA
