I know we have had threads discussing this before and from what I gathered from those threads, the neg rep was taken away because people were dishing out neg reps to others just because they didn't agree. While I like your reasoning, I don't think you should have completely done away with the neg rep.

Why not make neg rep available only to Mods? Basically, every time that a user violates site rules they get a neg rep. This will help legitimatize people's reputation and will also discourage users from violating site rules. It will also let the person know that their post was deleted. I don't think that deleting a post or thread should automatically result in a neg rep (Chizik rumor threads come to mind), just those that are because of things like language, inappropriate material, etc.

I'm not a big fan of the negative rep. I think if someone is evil enough, they will be banned. And what does it do anyways? Give you red instead of green bars?

I've said before, and I believe, if you want negative rep, you should only be able to give it out to thread starters. This way, if people don't want to get it, it prevents the "What do we do with Chizik (or any other guy)" threads.

Or, how about, the only way to give negative Rep is to recieve an equal ammount yourself? This way, people aren't just running around throwing out negative rep. It costs you something so you may use it only when you really deem it necessary.

Then again, what does negative reap do? If you get enough are you banned, can you not post? I don't think for some people just having a red bar is going to deter them much, probably just egg them on.

How about 1 negative rep a month. You would need to be picky

And if the mods determine that your negative rep was unwarranted, do you get charged with a timeout?

just kidding. The idea has merit.

Although I'm not longer a mod, I know this was extensively discussed and was decided that it would seem too biased for only mods to implement such a thing. It's was felt that taking neg rep away all together seemed more balanced and unbiased to everyone instead of having only a select few administer anything.

Neg rep does nothing. I dont even remember ever using it. Chances are, if you are planning on giving neg rep to someone who disagrees with you, you would be better off explaining why your side of the argument is better and using facts to justify it. If the other person is out of line with crude statements or anything generally offensive to you, report them to a mod. Simple as that.

I think you all worry too much about rep.
And that is realy reason it went away.. .too many ppl bitched and moaned about getting a neg rep ... it was a hassle on our side. IMO, it is better that is gone.

now I may give a neg rep type message when I rep them ... how can they really get mad??? they just got positive rep.

-keep.

Ya think?

This topic has come up at least weekly (either in its own thread or a within another) since -rep was removed. The undying desire to be able to give people negative rep on the internet is just silly.

I never used it, but if we could come to some kind of a solution that people liked at least we would avoid some of these threads for two weeks.
