As head coach, you don't get to grind on the recruiting trail nearly as much. Which is why some top recruiters don't make great head coaches. He'll have to learn to delegate AND needs to bring in a top notch staff.

Nothing like learning on the go with a Top 10 team!

Is that a fact or personal choice of HC's though? Calipari seems to like hitting it pretty hard.

Well, we know Niang's mom doesn't want TJ Otzelberger, that's for sure.

I wonder if he would consider transferring if TJ was named the coach. Sounds like she really dislikes him a great deal.

Do we know that is what she met when she posted? She could have known that if he was coming back it was setting up for Fred leaving... Maybe it was moreso she didn't want Fred to leave than for Otz to be back.

As I have learned over the past week or so, there is really nothing too all of that. I wouldnt keep spreading it unless it was confirmed.

Why did Otz leave for 2 years? If he was going to be the guy he missed out on 2 great years of learning from Fred. That's probably the biggest issue I have with him being the guy. Our 2 best years were without Otz. And he's been out of the system for 2 years. Fire Pollard.

Yes because the basketball universe runs through ISU and CFH. No one can learn anything or be a part of ISU basketball if the don't come here and stay here for eternity. You have so many big issues with him being the guy I don't know how you keep them all straight. Its amazing we survived him being part of the program at all.

Wait, that's it. That is why CFH is leaving. Otz being back has stunk up the program so terribly even CFH can't stand it.

"Two other separate sources said that Otzelberger has already been reaching out to people about potentially joining his staff as an assistant."

I'm calling B.S. on Mr. Rothstein. Pollard doesn't tell people things like that with reguards to coaching searches. I'm sure he's let Otz. know that he would like him to apply for it and be in the running. That's about as far as Pollard would go. Otz. is likely searching for candidates he can present to Pollard as part of his "plan" to try to land the job.

Pollard may very well be set on Otz, but I would find it VERY hard to believe anyone actually knows that considering we still have a head coach. Think about it, how would a "source" (is there a bigger cop-out in all of journalism than using the word "source?) know anything? Pollard doesn't go around telling people what he's thinking. Otz wouldn't go around telling people he's the next head coach before Hoiberg is even gone. My guess is Otz sent out some feelers to potential assistant coaches and they leaked it to "sources" which converted it into "T.J. Otzelberger is already looking for assistants to add to his staff, Pollard must have already told him the job is his."

National Media members have been off on this from the start.

Keep running with that narrative Ken Miller. I think that post has been verified as not meaning that.

I think niang recently said that he'll stay no matter who the coach is

I was fine with the idea of Otz initially and now I've gone back and forth so many times I lost count. Would love to grab an experienced HC to go with Otz at least for a few years but if it's TJ right away, I'm not going to be upset about it.

Here's the deal. Iowa State already knows Fred is going to go to the Bulls, they have for months. TJ coming back was no accident. Pollard will hire TJ and I'm guessing he's going to have a sweet coaching staff.

Just a hunch.

Its been stated over and over that his wife pushed the move to Washington to have an easier trip back to Australia. Its really pretty simple.

Fred still doesn't know if Fred is going to the Bulls.

Any 'no comment' responses from any of the Washington asst. coaches on this?
It's amazing how well the fraternity can keep their mouths closed on something that evidently has been going on for months. In the meantime, keep buying tickets.

There was talk that TJ might come back and Niang's mom said something like "Trust me, you don't want him back. None of us do." Or something very similar to that.

I'll give you guys my take since I was the creator of #TeamOtz.

Otz has 10+ years of D1, power 5, assistant experience under some great minds like GM, LR, FH. He is a very impressive recruiter as shown in all his stops. His wife is a Cyclone Great (for those that follow WBB), and he is originally from the Midwest.

ISU is not a destination for most coaches. Hell, we couldn't get our golden boy, mayor to even stay. From the list of potential replacements, Otz is the most familiar (more on this later) with the program and seems most likely to stay for an extended period if successful.

Sidenote: If Haase was hired or even reached out to, I lose a lot of faith in JP. His team caught fire against some terrible schools in his Conf Tourney and caught the Cyclones on an overall bad day. None of that is even close to translating into "ready for the next level"

Otz had a hand in all the big names to ISU over the last decade. Maybe not so much transfers as that seemed more MA and FH hotspot. The thing about the transfer market is its not a secret anymore. Blue bloods are in on it, and I don't think that would have been a competitive advantage going forward anyways. You have to recruit 4 year players to succeed long term. Enter Otz, who seems to be a player's coach and does wonders in the HS recruiting game. He will continue to bring big time players.

Back to familiarity, IMO, the most important factor for this next year. Our group of players is obviously self-governed and hard working, no matter who the coach. In other words, coaching won't be a huge factor for this next year anyways. A top 10 team is a top 10 team regardless of the coach. I consider Otz's first year comparable to David Blatt (Cav's coach). Learn the ropes year if you will. I know a lot of people are going to lose their **** over that but I don't really care. This team is hungry for a title next year no matter who is wearing the suit and tie.

To bring in an outside person with maybe a different mindset/culture could be the poison pill. We don't need that at all.

Otz is the right choice to me because of reasons listed above. I am fully behind him and excited to see what he can do this year (if everything is true of course). If he fails, I'll eat crow, but I think this is a good opportunity for him to have success, and turn that success into continued success with recruits. He brought in stud recruits selling McD, he can certainly bring in studs if he has a successful year with this team.
