CW said its all but guaranteed Charlie Henry will go with Hoiberg to the NBA so TJ will have two spots to fill. One can be the experienced coach to help with Xs and Os and one can be the "bomb recruiter".
If true, give me Grayer. Only a little bit because he is a former Cyclone. But mostly because of the Bridges connection, as well as other possible in-roads to Michigan recruits. Grayer and Mann could give us a solid Michigan pipeline.

I'm ok with Otz getting the nod. Financially it probably makes a lot of sense.

Nothing about college athletics makes sense financially. At the end of the day, surgeons who have saved countless lives in their careers will be getting paid less than a guy whose job is to teach kids how to play with a leather ball.

I love seeing people freaking out about otz being out HC. Apparently his website was taken down, but it had a bunch of great quotes from former players about how he was a big reason for their success. A lot of them said he was constantly in the gym with them. Otz appears to be one of those super hard workers who will not fail at what he does, I will gladly take him as our head coach if pollard and others think he is the right fit.

But if Grayer is an asst. then he's not going to be on the ground in MI building these mentor type relationships with MI kids from an early age that could potentially lead them to ISU. There are positives and negatives.

CBB = 80% recruiting, 20% coaching

TJ likes to recruit. What some consider a "grind" others consider a passion. For our specific situation give me a recruiter over an X and O guy every day.

And this is what keeps me from joining the lemmings and jumping off the cliff. There is a bunch of potential. But, as with the others, we are scared as **** of the unknown. I Hoiberg wouldnt have raised the stakes/expectations over the years this wouldnt have been as big of a deal. However, we want to make sure now that we built and not fall back. Its definitely not personal against TJ.

So how many kids has Grayer led to ISU in the year's he's lived in Michigan? 0? I'd much rather have him on the staff to get Bridges.

I would think Otz would have as good of a chance as anyone on the short list of coaches to be committed to Iowa State long term (I am also not in the camp that thinks Hoiberg used ISU as a stepping stone).

Jeff Goodman is on the TJO train.

@GoodmanESPN: When Fred Hoiberg took the job at Iowa State, one of the primary reasons he succeeded was due to assistant T.J. Otzelberger.

@GoodmanESPN: Otzelberger was the one who had recruited Melvin Ejim, also helped land Georges Niang and persuaded Hoiberg to take a bunch of transfers.

Nice leak from jp

TJ will get us some good recruits. Will be nice to have a coach that is fully motivated to hit the recruiting trail

I am too. Assuming JP conducted a full search. Which is highly unlikely if word is already leaking out that TJ is the guy while we still have a head coach.

I'm sure (at least i hope) Pollard understands how critical this hire is. Biggest one of his tenure. Sustaining success is a must for ISU MBB with the state of the football program. If that goes away because of a rushed/friendly hire, Pollard shouldn't get another chance to hire someone again.

Or TJ will be a smashing success and Pollard will be a genius. But I don't see much middle ground...

As head coach, you don't get to grind on the recruiting trail nearly as much. Which is why some top recruiters don't make great head coaches. He'll have to learn to delegate AND needs to bring in a top notch staff.

Nothing like learning on the go with a Top 10 team!

Why did Otz leave for 2 years? If he was going to be the guy he missed out on 2 great years of learning from Fred. That's probably the biggest issue I have with him being the guy. Our 2 best years were without Otz. And he's been out of the system for 2 years. Fire Pollard.

Another thing to remember is Otz has coached under different types of coaches. McDermott was known as a defensive coach, Romar is a good defensive coach, and obviously Fred is an amazing offensive coach. He has also worked with Sadler and Lutz. I understand people's skepticism towards him, but he has a hell of a lot better credentials than Fred when he came here. If we brought in a different coach from a different system, players may not buy in as well. I would love having hornacek as much as anyone, but having otzelberger will cause a hell of a lot less stress on the current players.
