My biggest beef with the "January Bowl" thing is that it isn't a level playing field and does not indicate your level of success accurately. Iowa tied for 4th in the Big 10 this year and got to a "traditional" Big 10 Bowl. In the late 80s and early 90s the Big 10 noticed that January bowls were more prestigious and they moved the Gator Bowl and the Captial One Bowl (don't know what they were called before) to January first from late December.
Now the Big 10 has 5 January bowls, and could have had 6 this year if they filled all of their bowl slots.
The Big 12 has 2, 3 in a year with two BCS bowls.
