Chris,

If you want a nice quiet place to enjoy time with just your new spouse in the U.S., then go to Sanibel Island or Captiva near Ft. Meyers. May is off season and less expensive, plenty of good restaurants, long beaches for long walks, and quiet. If you want the rowdy bar scene don't go to Sanibel.

Airfare is pretty cheap to Ft. Myers that time of year if you book enough ahead.

I have heard good things about the Sanibel area.

Honeymoon spots just depend on how much time you have and what you want to spend. We went to New Orleans 8 yrs ago. Easy trip. Left CR at 6am, short lay-over in StL, on Bourbon St by noon. Couldn't beat it. Spent 2 nights and 3 days there. Fortunately for us, my in-laws have a winter condo in Diamondhead, MS, an hr away from N.O. We then went there, (without the in-laws, we got married in Oct, they go down in Jan) lots of golf, shopping. The Gulf Coast was awesome. This was 4 yrs before Katrina. Not an expensive trip for us, but lots of fun.

We went to the Pacific Northwest for our honeymoon. Flew in to Seattle, stayed in a B&B 3 nights, drove down to Portland, stayed there 2 nights and then drove back up and flew out of Seattle. It was gorgeous weather (early September) and a very interesting place to visit.

We honeymooned in Hawaii - great time if you can swing it. We went 8 mos after the wedding so we had some time to save up for some of it. (I may still be paying on it).

We spent 5 days on Maui and 2 on Oahu ... don't waste your time with Oahu.

Heard good things about Kauwi (sp?) - Maui was great, take the road to Hannah and hike up to the waterfall at the end of it - spectacular stuff. expensive - but there is no chance you'll be disappointed

Another vote for Maui. You can't beat the weather and beaches. Skip the road to Hana, unless you really like curvy roads. If you like snorkeling (or if you haven't gone snorkeling but think you might like it) you cannot beat Hawaii. Just make sure you take time to just do nothing. I spent my honeymoon with my wife in Maui fall 08 for 10 days and we did just about everything on the island, but at the price of not spending enough time on the beach.

Wherever you end up, congrats and enjoy!

I do agree that Playa is more mom and pop, but the resorts are quite as nice as the Moon Palace..... We never leave the resort. It depends on what you want for a honeymoon. If he had said, "We don't want to be in a touristy type place" I would say Playa. Just keep in mind, it take about an hour more to get to your resort.

we wanted to cruise in august, which is hurricane season in florida, so we did it out of california. Which was good- we would have had to share our stateroom with all the poor souls caught in Katrina!

We've been to Maui a few times now. Never Kawaii, although I've heard it's nice. Zero desire to go to Oahu...I've heard that Honolulu is like Miami and I wanted to avoid that. I'm a big WWII buff, but for some reason Pearl Harbor doesn't excite me.

The thing that I like best about Maui is just getting in the car and cruising. We do the road to Hana one day and the drive around the west side another. The rest of the time is usually beach at Makena or Lahaina or Kaanapali. Spend some time shopping at Wailea and maybe a half day doing a whale watching or snokeling tour. A great, relaxing vacation. No money exchange, no driving worries, perfect weather almost every day.

We went to Honolulu & Kawaii, for our Honeymoon. Spent 4 days in Honolulu, and 3 days in Kawaii. I really thought the trip was awesome !

Vegas or San Diego. Fly into Santa Ana and rent a car and drive to San Diego to save money.

I have heard good things about the Sanibel area.

My brother-in-law had a June wedding there. My wife said it was way too humid. I don't know whether that's normal for May/June or if it's just what the weather was like when they were there.

The road around the southwest side was closed when we were there in September 08 from the earthquake the winter before. Maybe I'd feel different if I didn't have to drive the hairpin turns twice. We went straight back to ka'anapali from the sacred pools and it took well over 4 hours. I agree with everything else though, skip Oahu and relax on Maui.

I first read that as "Honeymoon Sports"... glad I read it again...

Why?

I first read it as Honeymoon "Spats." Now that would be interesting.

BTW, we went to KC for our honeymoon. We hit Worlds of Fun AND the zoo. How could you top that? Guess it matters a bit that it was a l-o-n-g time ago compared with some of the posters here.

I thought tightness of the road was a little over-advertised. It wasn't too bad at all, the exception being the last section near the pools. Did you swim or make the hike? If I remember right the black beaches were there too - pretty cool all around.

While I'm sticking with my Playa Del Carmen advice I gave earlier, another good option would be New England. Rent a car, drive around, some of the prettiest country in the US. You could stop in Boston, NYC, or not?

If you decide on Playa I have friends that live there and own a great hotel.
