No, but he certainly didn't need to be ISU's coach during that time. Let ISU MBB move on.
If reports are to be believed the deal may not even be finalized yet pending a doctor signing off on Fred's health situation. What if that were to not go as planned?

A lot of people here would look stupid? Fred probably coaches another year and then bails for best 2016 offer, because ISU doesn't love him anymore?

You missed the point. People are upset because he didn't do his job this past couple of months. Recruiting stopped. Just about everyone knew ISU had a lame duck coach. Recruits knew it, transfers knew it. He didn't want to say anything to the local media but he sure seemed to talk with multiple people in the NBA.

According to NBC he has had a 5 year, 25 million dollar contract for awhile with the Bulls. Fans have a right to be upset in the way he handled this. The Chicago press won't be lapdogs when things don't go right next season.
Sounds like he interviewed with anyone who had a pro job opened.

This is all happening so quickly!!!!

I don't blame Fred for anything. Except the BS about "dream job", "perfect place", and the "I could retire here" crap from last year. You don't say that and less than a year later you are interviewing all over the place. Other than that, he is taking a top NBA job and getting paid double the money.

The commitment Fennelly has shown the the University is amazing. One of the few people that have backed up the "easy" sayings that flow out of coach's mouths in today's world.

In Fred's defense, where would Fennelly go? There aren't many steps up from Iowa State in the women's game. The WNBA is not a step up. Unless he's had job offers I don't know about offering him more than twice his currently salary.

If you would like to believe that, then it sounds like resigning was definitely the best option... for both sides. No reason for Fred to put his health 3td, behind the NBA and ISU.

If Fred resigns we would lose the $500k buyout. Why would we want him to do that for a couple extra days?

If he isn't physically fit enough to coach the Bulls how in good conscience does the ADept allow him to continue coaching here?

BF has been saught out several times as well as CJL. Both have turned down offers.

I don't believe anything anymore, but that's what the reports say. If something were to come out now it'd likely be something unexpected even to Fred, by all accounts he's in good health following the recent surgery, so who knows what he'd do with that news maybe he would quit altogether. I don't see that happening, point is if the deal really isn't finalized yet it would be ridiculous to expect him to resign.

He's fine, there is no reason to believe the deal would be stopped because of Fred's health, my point though is that if the deal isn't yet finalized or has just recently been finalized there is no way you could expect Fred to resign without something else in place.

But I think that's the rub that makes people upset Fred is leaving. When he started, there were plenty of steps up in the women's game. There aren't now, because of BILL and what he's done. People hoped that Fred, the Mayor, the favorite son, the always loyal, turned down everywhere else to play college ball at home...married his HS sweetheart and allat other sappy stuff we had to hear in every bio piece...would do the same when he was a coach. That he wouldn't just have a few years of success and get gone, interviewing for every ****ty job that's open this year.

Some were hoping that he'd turn ISU MBB into a program that there really weren't many steps up from, within the college game. To the point where we had momentum where recruits wouldn't scatter like cockroaches if ONE coach is gone. To the point where as a replacement, we're picking thru the great candidates who are interested, rather than trying to figure out what unproven commodity we should take our chances on.

Now, granted, that's a pie-in-the-sky dream, but many thought Fred is talented enough to make it happen...to make the ISU faithful so proud of our basketball program, the ****ty football team year in and year out doesn't even bother us that much....and some thought Fred wanted to do the same, based on his sappy discussions of his love for Ames. Sure we knew the NBA was eventually GOING to happen...that cheap buyout wasn't just random...but we hoped it wouldn't be so soon.

Personally, I'm disappointed, but not angry...I refuse to be angry over a sport. I won't hold any ill will toward Fred, heck, we all make our own choices based on what's right for us...but I'll always wonder what could have been, and if we return to mid-pack with a crappy hire, it'll sting a little more.

This. For all those defending Fred, you are burying your heads in the sand and ignoring this.
