I guess so, somewhat. Him and his family can do whatever they want to and makes them happy.

I just keep trying to figure out in my mind what is driving him to do this, especially right now? None of it seems logical at all? Is his working relationship with JP bad? Does he just HATE recruiting that bad? And I just keep wondering if this is what his family would want? Kids are still in school, in small town Iowa, which you can't get much better than that. Grandparents are all close, which I'm assuming they like as well?

It's just curious to all of us I'm sure what is driving this decision right now?

The job is now open. That is what is driving the decision now

Or they could be tired of living in a fish bowl. Being a celebrity in a small town has major drawbacks. Somewhere else they can have a normal life where they can go in public and not have to be the center of attention. It's smothering and suffocating. And in north Chicago they just be another millionaire's wife and kids. Nothing special.

I don't think it's some sudden thing that just happened, there's been interest him from the NBA for years. He's interviewed during previous offseasons, everyone should have known that he would leave for the NBA at some point. I don't know that it sucks any more now than it would next year or in 2/3/4 years. The UAB thing sucks, a crappy way to end, but if he waits until he's happy with ISU's season he'd be here until we won a national championship which might never happen.

If people think this was an easy decision either professionally or personally I think they'd be sadly mistaken. For anyone, basketball coach or not, taking another job and moving your family to a new city is never an easy decision, even if it means more money.

Haha they will move to Chicago. And most likely live in the North Shore burbs with all the other rich folk and their mansions.

Now, if he took the Pelicans job, you would have a better point, although still not a good one. But, I could see why somebody wouldn't want to live in a homeless swamp.

I don't believe they will be going with him. The original plan was for them to stay here

He'd be the coach of one of the biggest NBA franchises, that's still pretty special.

The job would be there again in 3-4 years after Bulls management runs another coach out. I think that's why many of us are wondering "why now?" IMO, like I've seen others post on the forums, I think Fred doesn't want to coach for a really long time (decades), I think he wants to coach maybe 10 more years and then hang 'em up. It seems like coaching is way too stressful for him and he'd value the time with his family and the golf course more.

Could be, but I would guess this move to Chitown is more like swimming in the ocean, surrounded by sharks. Tick tock. Both scenarios have their downsides.

Everyone's missing the real issue. What will happen to all those t-shirts out there?

Hearing Fred told JP last night he is taking the Bulls job. Not sure if it is true or not, but my guy is usually right. It will all be out tomorrow. Whoever said the 1st is a genius.

Here nor there
I really don't think you understand what's happening here. And anyways isn't late April through May mostly a quiet period for college basketball recruiting? I know all of May is either a quiet or dead period.

I don't think you understand the contention you tried to counter.

Fred is an all-time Cyclone great, but the manner in which his interest in coaching in the NBA was handled is fairly poor. If you reach a point you can't recruit and are not only actively interviewing but finalizing, resigning would have been the move to make. Perhaps you think that just now happened, but the contention was it happened awhile ago.

I am not sure when it happened, but given what Hines has reported several of Fred's actions while on the job make the manner be pretty poor

This is all happening so quickly!!!!

:jimlad:
I don't blame Fred for anything. Except the BS about "dream job", "perfect place", and the "I could retire here" crap from last year. You don't say that and less than a year later you are interviewing all over the place. Other than that, he is taking a top NBA job and getting paid double the money.

he was interviewing for NBA jobs last year. Opposing coaches we recruit against knew this, and they negatively recruiting against us based on that. So to be more accurate, his flirtation with the NBA started a year ago, and it has hurt future program momentum.
