Listen to Fred today and when he talks about what it is like being a HC for the very first time. Aside from having just an unbelievable knowledge of X and Os that is Fred...there is a ton going on and a huge learning curve and as he said he would not have basically survived had it not been for Bobby Lutz that first year( I'm paraphrasing) I really don't think people realize just how much is involved in being a HC at a P5 school or any D1 school. The X and O part of it was prob fairly easy for Fred but that's because he's a brilliant mind and learned a lot from several HOF coaches prior to coming here. Just watching him talk today about that gives me even more reason to hope we hire a coach with precious HC experience.

Jamie Dixon leaving Pitt and the ACC for I-State and the B12. A bit surprise if it does happens I also wonder whether it might be a ploy on his (his agent's) part to extend or improve his current contract.

I think he's making 2.6, which means he would be steep,, but his name came up with the DePaul job, so maybe he's looking to move?

If he's willing to go to DePaul, we have a shot. DePaul is a sleeping giant, but it is a huge rebuild job after the past 20 years or so there.

Classic Iowa state fans. We make the tournament a few straight years. Win the big 12 tournament twice. Now all our fans think the top coaches in the game should be running to JP offering to coach for half the price because we're such a big basketball program.

Get real guys. We will have a good year next year but after that... It might be kind of rough for a couple years and as you have seen, it's hard to recruit guys to come to Iowa state, even our great Fred couldn't do it very well.

Classic Iowa state fan (maybe?). Thinks it's still 1970 and we play in the Armory. That we don't have excellent facilities. That we have to pass a collection plate at games just to pay the electric bill. Ignores the fact we just cashed a $25+ million check from the Big XII--for one year! Pretends we weren't paying Fred $2+ million a year.

And try telling people who contribute $2,500 minimum to sit in the parquet that they shouldn't expect much in the next coach--that poor old Iowa State really isn't that attractive of a job. You're the one that needs to get real.

Here nor there
Once you get past the "story" aspect of Hoiball, there are a lot of great candidates to be excited about moving the program forward. Assuming Hoiberg didn't **** us over too badly by waiting until June

If we get the right type of ISU basketball minds involved in the selection we will find one of the many great mid-major coaches out there, and then we can dump the savings into buying recruits with assistants. Maybe we even get lucky and a Dillon Brooks will become available this summer.

I've been in and out all day and haven't been able to keep up with the latest...is Jamie Dixon really a serious candidate?

I know it's not addressed to me, but if TJ is the hire I would definitely be more comfortable if he had his own version of Lutz on the staff. Maybe someone like Herb Sendek, who was let go by Arizona State but has had some success as a head coach.

of course fans are going to give him a chance. But he has to be an adult and realize that he is fairly under qualified to take over a power 5 conference team. He's also got to prove to us that he can do it. Name me another big 10 or 12 school that would hire tj today. There's not a one.

Did anyone hear Mike Hlas of the CR Gazette on Iowa Public Radio today? I believe he said he thought the new coach would be announced next week and would not be a mid-major head coach. My interpretation of his comments is he expects a head coach from a major conference. Hoping someone else was listening and can verify.

I doubt he has any idea. One would THINK that Iowa State could lure away a major conference coach. But one would be wrong based on everything I have heard/read over the last month.

TJ is not a mid-major head coach.

What doesn't make sense to me is that guys don't want to hire Prohm or Underwood because they took over winning teams, but they want to hire a coach who's never been on a winning team? What?

Not a great time to be taking chances, the right move sustains the success and reputation that Fred established, the wrong move and we are back at the door step.

Just because a person has head coaching experience does not mean that person is automatically going to be successful at this level or at this school. It is short sighted and ignores all of the good attributes TJ brings to the table to automatically favor someone with a couple years of experience as a HC over him. The other candidates have to bring more to the table than merely having experience as a HC.
