Watch us get stuck in the east with Cincy, WVU, UCF, Houston, TCU, Baylor and Texas Tech.
I am a proponent of divisions. Having 16 or 18 team conferences is just a mess of schools with limited story lines but at the very top.

The biggest issue with divisions historically dealt with having a weak division champ winning the CCG. The Big10 West predicament. But with 8 or 9 team divisions, that limits the probability of a low ranked team making a CCG. Also, Conferences shouldn't "fall-in-love" with one East/West or North/South division set-up. If after 2 or 4 years one division is significantly tougher- adjust.

ISU is a fit for east or west. But I have to believe under any scenario that Kansas & Kansas State would be in the same division as Iowa State. And then CU if we go west or Okie State if we are in an eastern division. I hope the Big12 tries to balance out the divisions more than being 100% focused on geography.

I don’t know why every team just can’t have 3 permanent rivals and then play everybody else every other year. It’d be a great balance between the consistency needed to build rivalries/traditions while still ensuring every team plays as often as possible.

My vote is no fixed divisions. But I think the schedule each year should have two round robins. That way you ensure the top of each group play each other and it doesn't all come down to tiebreakers.
I think this is what the conference commissioners are trying to achieve if each conference receives a set number of auto-qualifiers and then there be a couple at large/G5 bids.

If each conference gets a set number of auto bids the goal is 2 fold:
  1. Create an on field system for filling the auto-bids (vs. relying on a committee).
  2. How to position your next team in to get one of the 2 at-large bids.
In the case of the Big12/ACC does an end of season flex week or season-end semi/CCG best position their 3rd/4th best teams.

With auto quals for the playoff there's a better chance divisions or pods become a thing.

in my oponion, to make it as fair as possible it should be like Big 8 schools + SWC schools as one division and then the others are kind of stuck together....sucks for them but would bring some sort of normalcy back to the regional ties

Baylor
Colorado
Iowa State
Kansas
K-State
Oklahoma State
TCU
Texas Tech

Arizona
Arizona State
BYU
Cincinnati
Houston
UCF
Utah
West Virginia

The best design for divisions falls apart when any changes are made to the conference membership. That is what allowed EIU to avoid Ohio State so much. It is the resetting of the divisions that creates the unfathomable gaps in playing other conference teams.

Set schedules based on the rankings of the prior year. Have set schedules for each position in the rankings to promote better games and balanced schedules.

For example, odd ranked teams play the other 7 odd ranked teams plus the three nearest even ranked teams.
#1 ranked team plays - 3, 5, 7, 9, 11, 13, 15, 2, 4, 6
#7 ranked team plays - 1, 3, 5, 9, 11, 13, 15, 8, 10, 12

And so on. There still a chance you don’t see an opponent often, but it reduces the chance of one top team from having a weaker or stronger schedule than another in the race to the CCG.

West and East like Dennis Dodd's article. A concern is that it could jeopardize conference unity. Basically, the Pac schools so far aren't all bought into the Big 12. This will just keep that divide still going on.
