That's the gimme solution for an 18-game basketball schedule where coaches have been complaining about travel. Pod twice (6), every other team once (12).

For football, though? Eh.
For football, I would use the pods but rotate which two are together in each division every two years + Play a game from the two pods out with #01 vs. #01, #02 vs. #02, etc. from one of the out pods and #1 vs. #4, #2 vs. #3, #3 vs #2 and #4 vs. #1from the other out pod for those two years for a nice nine game, two-divison schedule with one team from each of the other pods (one hard and one easy).

Pods is the true answer.
WVU, Cinn., UCF, Houston
Utah, BYU, Arz, Arz state
ISU, Kansas, kstate, colo
Baylor, TT, Tcu Oklahoma state
How do you see Pods differing from 2 divisions? Pods allowing more frequent games against teams outside your pod.

IMO the pods you have above nail the core school groupings. The East (WVU) and West (Utah) pods would always be distinct to minimize travel. Then it's just a matter of pairing the Plains (ISU) or South (Baylor) pod with an East or West pod.

I like not having all 4 Texas schools in the same Pod and ideally it would be a 2/2 split. But not sure how it's possible if WVU, Cincy and UCF stick together from a rivals and geography perspective. And I would think Okie State would like to maximize games against Texas schools from a recruiting perspective.
