Anyone else hearing that JP has already decided Prohm is coming back?

Who was the one good win against? If that coach lost to a joker like T.J. then it’s pretty clear we shouldn’t hire him either.

Chris Beard lost to that joker Steve Prohm in Lubbock his final four season. Unless I'm mistaken his only home loss of that year. So what. I think I can give Craig Smith a one game mulligan on this don't you? Doesn't make him a bad coach anymore than losing to Steve Prohm and one of his most underachieving teams means that Chris Beard sucks.

And although not my first choice......Smith has beat a ranked SDSU twice this year. So it seems like losing once to a team like UNLV is probably an outlier. Something I'm sure JP would weigh if he looked into Craig Smith.

There isn’t that much difference between Smith and T.J. and you are correct one game outliers can occur. But the reality is T.J. was 4-2 against Smith at South Dakota State where T.J. had the better squad and T.J. is 2-2 against Smith at UNLV where Smith has had the better squads.
Look at Utah State’s latest outings at Boise State when compared to UNLV.
The two best teams in the MWC are San Diego State and Colorado State this year.

How old is Brian Dutcher? Does he have Midwestern roots?

It's a much different job now. Maintaning and building on a culture you were part of creating is much different than taking over a dumpster fire with no identity and revamping everything.

Agreed, which is my concern with TJ. Took over a ready made program with SDSU and did fine. He's kind of having to remake UNLV but hasn't had enough time there. I think we need a guy who is a builder now because as always I think our fans are underestimating the job in front of the next coach.

It took the power of Christ to raise Lazarus from the dead. If I'm being totally honest I'm afraid it's going to take some level of messianic figure to get this program up and walking again.

Yep, I agree.

And I know I've brought up his name before on here, and I'm going to do it again right now, but what you wrote above is why I really want us to take a long, hard look at Scott Nagy of Wright State (if he expresses interest).

The guy took the aforementioned SDSU from a Division II program into one of the best Midwestern mid-major programs, and he's getting it done at Wright State now as well. The lack of Power 6 experience is a valid concern, but he knows how to build a program, and he knows how to win.

ISU fans are really dedicated, new coach will get more than a fair chance and good support IMO. If he can get the team to play a entertaining competitive style of BB fans will show up. That style doesn't have to be high powered offense(Johnny and Fred) defense works to (Floyd and Eustachy).
The team and staff needs to show a identity and a willingness to play hard as long as there is effort fans will support them. Heck look at the game thread from yesterday in the beginning there was despair, but when the guys put the rally on I remember no posts wishing them to blow it, once the game slipped away it seemed to more of a sense of disappointment IMO.

Sorry this post got longer than I meant for it to.

Haha, yeah good post...mine was more in the sarcastic realm.

Slow, fast, fully lit, playing in black light, don't care.

Just coach and play with purpose.

it took a guy with zero coaching experience two years to turn this program around. It doesn’t have to be a long process. Basketball is not like football.

It doesn't have to be long, but there were several factors working in his favor, and a tremendous amount of luck, that are extremely unlikely to be recreated. I would say it can be turned around quickly, but it's unlikely to be turned around quickly without a massive influx of talent.

Why does everyone keep saying “mid-major” like it doesn’t apply to TJ? 2 years ago he was a mid-major, and since he made the jump he has a losing record.

Just because he technically is not coaching at a mid-major school does not indicate any clear cut gap in ability, record, etc.

I guess I have trouble looking at UNLV as more than a mid-major. I didn't know we viewed it as something higher.

My heuristic --

"HIGH-MAJOR" or "P6"

ACC
Big 12
Big East
Big Ten
Pac-12
SEC

"MID-MAJOR"

A-10
American
Missouri Valley
Mountain West
WCC

"LOW-MAJOR" is everything else.

I would call South Dakota State (in the Horizon) a low-major, though one of the better low-major conferences, and UNLV a mid-major, though in one of the stronger MM conferences.

Think you mean Summit League. It's maybe low-major although I'd put their WBB league in mid-major.

Yes, my bad. And that's a good point. Good WBB conference, and one of the better low-majors for MBB, but I don't see a way you would put them on the same level as the A-10, Amer, MVC, MWC, or the WCC.

The WCC is weird because it is so top-heavy, but it is hard not to be on that tier when you have the #1 team in the country so often and many of the other WCC programs have improved since Gonzaga joined up.
