So if you are already in shape or already work out on a regular basis, is P90X going to change anything? I am thinking about checking it out, but I don't need to lose weight or tone up, I'm just getting bored...

I get the idea this is more of a program for people who are just getting back into working out.

I'd say unless you’re a high end or elite athlete or doing triathlons year round this workout will challenge you. It's a really good total body workout…… stretching, yoga, strength, agility, etc. It's a good mix with tons and tons of variation. The abs workout is only 16 min and I couldn't do 60sec. without taking a break the 1st couple of times.

My wife is in extremely good shape. She runs 15-20 miles per week, does strength training 3 times a week, and works very hard. She's done the P90x strength training days with me (Chest and Back, Shoulders and arms, Legs and Back, and Abs ripper X) and she has found new limits.

As for me, I've been in better shape in years past but I still worked out 3-5 times per week with cardio 30-40min and lifting 2-3 times a week. I just had a hard time getting motivated and really got board. I was looking for something challenging and something that would push me. So far this has been it. The best thing is I get to workout with my wife at home. Personally I get better work outs when I'm with her and she's a real trooper. Even with this she still works harder than me.

The workouts are 55-92min long. There is not much if any down time and when you do get it your trying to catch up with your breath or tracking what you just did. My heart rate stays around 150bpm for every workout. Then bam it's over with some stretching and cool down.

I’m starting my 3rd week and I’m just starting to get the hang of some of the moves and what’s next. It's not just pushups and pullups it's 6 different forms of pushups and 7 variations of pullups (wide front grip, reverse grip, close grip front, super wide fronts, switch grip, reverse close grip). And that's just the phas one stuff. Next week things get changed up with a different workouts and different sequences then in week 5 we start with 3 out of 7 new workouts for 3 more weeks. Haven’t seen them but can’t wait to do them.

If you follow the program and push play it will work. They've done their work putting a really good product together, now it's up to you to put the time and work in. And I mean work. I've had things sore that I didn't know could be sore.

So, in the midst of your smart-*** response did you consider what I was stating? It's an expensive investment compared to books, other DVDs, or simple self-motivation that could be used to get in shape for far less money.

It's not that much money. It's like 4 months of a gym membership. The thing I like best about the DVD's is they keep you going. Breaks are short and it keeps your heart rate up.

Did mean it to be smart a55, sorry you took it that way. I really didn't think I said anything wrong. And seriously, this is a major time commitment. It's 6-7 days a week and every day it's 60 minutes of extreme physical activity. I get up at 4:30am every morning just to be able to get the workout in, eat right, take care of my son and get to work on time.

Don't take this as a smart a55 statement but here's what I was looking at......Considering folks go to Farrell's extreme body shaping for a couple of hundred bucks for 10 weeks and it's over, the $120 investment for P90x that you get to keep (12 dvd's and a very detailed nutrition guide) it really isn't that bad. Mind you, Farrell’s gets results as well if you work at it. Or consider having to pay for a gym membership every month which I was doing($25-$50/month) and a personal trainer on top of that (tack on another $20/hr minimum) and again the $120 for the P90x program isn't that bad. Those are the situations I'm in so for me the $120 was a no brainer. Now if you don't have the money (been there as bad as anyone when I was in school) then I can understand your issue.

If you haven't ordered you may want to consider other options. Even if you have ordered you have 30 days to return according to their web site. I work with a few folks who bought P90x off of ebay for $60 with everything I got. Other folks have been able to find it on Craig’s list for even less but only got the dvd's. Couple that with the online resources that are available and I'd think you could do this for half the cost. Or find someone to split the cost with and they can be a workout buddy. IMO this is better because it helps with workout motivation and doing the program.

Again sorry if you thought I was being a smart a55. I hope you get what you want with it.

You need enough room to do lunges and take about 3 big strides. My wife and I do P90x in the living room and the problem that we are facing is that we are stretching out the carpet when we do wall squats. Oh, well - we'll just have to have it fixed later.

how much room do you need to do the workouts?

I do mine on a 5x7 rug and then pullups on an bar that I made in my basement. I'd say of you had a 10x10 space +/-2 you'd be ok. I did a couple of days in a hotel room last week. I just moved a coffey table and chair and had all the room I needed for legs/back and Kempo. Plyometrics will take the most room LxWxH due to the activities and jumping you have to do.

Alright, feel free to first give me a hard time for being cynical...but, I was convinced mostly from this thread to get p90x. I ordered via Craigslist, just the DVDs to save $. Is there a website that provides downloads of the nutrition program, workout log, etc.?

Thanks.

You really don't need a whole lot of room. I do it in my dorm room. You can modify the lunges and other moves that they show for a smaller setting.

I was looking through the P90X DVDs that were burned for me and noticed that I am missing 3 of them. (Core Synergistics; Chest, Shoulders & Triceps; Back & Biceps). I'd really like to find someone that is doing P90X that would be able to burn these discs for me.

Contact me if you are able to help me and we can work something out.

Thanks!

Glad you were able to find a set of DVD's online.

As for nutrition, I haven't found the formal giude online but the link below has some really good information in it posted by a guy called RedFalcon16. As well there are several threads in the Beach Body Forum on nutrition where folks post detailed meal plans. Near the end of the pgs. of the link below you'll also see some of RedFalcon16's meal plans.

Here is a link that had some of the workout plan forms that come from Team Beach Body. There's also some nutrition info here.

Here is a link to a really good excel spread sheet that works in tandem with the classic program. It helps track reps and wt for each workout. There are better ones on line that are less than $10 but this one works fine for me.

I just received my copy in the mail today (bought it off ebay from China for about 20 bucks less). I'm wondering since I work on the road a lot and stay in a hotel if I would be better served to get a resistance band? I'm capable of doing pull ups (don't have the bar yet) and I have dumbells but room in my vehicle is a little cramped with always having my suitcase and golf clubs. I probably could fit everything though. I'd like to do this with the diet but I doubt I can do a whole lot without a kitchen of my own.

I'd get the pull up bar, it shouldn't take up much room at all. Then I'd go with the bands for everything else. I think if you get the 3 or 4 sizes, the upper two will challenge you.

I have to travel the week of the 23rd and that's the week I start phase 2. I plan to take the pull up bar and the one band we have. I might have to get the next one up because the red one we have it good for shoulders but for arms I need more. Good luck.

As for the diet, follow Beach Body link I have above, it will give you some good insight on what you should be eating.

If you have to travel between workouts (sit in the car for hours at a time) then I feel for ya because you'll be sore if you push yourself. Just setting there then you have to get up and out....ouch.

7-8 hours travel from Waukegan, IL to Denison, IA and then back at the end of the week. It sucks but it's what I've got to do for work right now in this economic climate.

I love p90x, It kicked my arse for the first 4 weeks, but you can see results in the first two, so it gets you motivated to keep doing it. I don't follow the diet, but i eat pretty healthy anyway, and the results are still very impressive. Best workout I have ever done.

Checking in to see how folks are doing with the workouts and stuff. My wife and I just finished up our phase 1 recovery week which was was still some hard work. Got into Core Synergistics 2x's this week and it's a tuff workout. Did Yoga 2x's, Stretch 2x's, and Kempo once.

I previewed the new DVD's for phase 2 (start Monday) and they look like a55 kickers as well. I have to travel most of next week so it will be tuff but I plan on taking the DVD's and pull up bar with me along with the bands and see how things go. I put 2 of the workouts on my iPod so my wife can do them while I'm out. We'll see how that works.

What is everyone using for a pull-up bar? I have been looking at some online but I haven't made my final decision since we don't really have a good door that I can use for one.

Our basement isn't finished so we don't have a doorway down there to use a door mounted pull-up bar. I looked at a pull-up tower but they were expensive and only 1 person could use it at once.

Soooooo....I took 1" steel pipe and hung one in our basement. It has 9 total parts plus 4 3/8"x4" bolts and cost about $65. I took 2 - 24" pieces and drilled 2 aligned holes in each about 10" apart. They are bolted vertically to a main beam in the basement. I then took 2 - 90deg elbows connected to the 24 inchers. To the elbows I have 2=12" pieces that come straight out away from the beam. Then 2 more 90deg elbows to start the main cross bar. The main bar is 6' long so my wife and I can both do pull-ups at the same time. So far it works great.

I've got a pic below. No laughing.....it works. In 21 days I went from being able to do 5 pull-ups to 9...ugh.:biglaugh: I hope to be up to 12-15 by day 60 and 16-20 by day 90.
