My buddy from college came to visit a few years back and the first thing he wanted to do was order a home team huger than huge pizza. I'll never forget the look on his face when i told him home team had closed.

I feel like Home Team got a bad rap. It was better that Dominos on the west side of campustown.

Early 80's Pizza Pit was cheap pizza especially using the coupons in the Daily. Valentino's was for a nicer place, same with Minsky's. Not sure when Great Plains showed up but it's now where I go if I have pizza in Ames. I want to say Great Plains was around in the 80's but I'm not 100% sure. Heck I still miss Happy Joes out on Duff(?) One of the floods took it out a few yrs ago.
It got flooded out a few times. Hank kept cleaning up, rebuilding and reopening. The last time he just couldn't see taking out another loan to rebuild at his age. It was sad to see it go, but I totally understand. Just not a great location considering the flood plain.

About a year ago, I took Executive Express from Ames and had Hank as a driver. Best trip to the airport ever. Guy loves Iowa State sports.

Valentino's at the mall was dynamite. The salad/pizza buffet was awesome. Was ok at the new location, but when the Purchell's sold it to a new owner, it went WAY down hill. They went super cheap on everything. Wasn't surprised when it closed.

Happy Joe's was perfect for birthday parties as a kid. Wasn't there a siren or something that went off when they came out to sing? The Kohler family is awesome. Still miss that place.

Ha. Saw this thread was resurrected. Pizza selections in Ames are even worse now than they were then. The only thing worse than Ames' pizza choices is Ames' internet provider choices. Both are shockingly horrible for a college town.

I had Jeff's only once and thought it was mediocre. I had ordered a large though so i had leftovers the next morning. That pizza was by far the best cold leftover pizza i've ever had. Not sure how it happened but that night in the fridge made it taste pretty good!
They permanently lost my business when they never delivered a pizza I paid for. I called three times after my order and kept being told it was on its way. Never made it. Emailed the manager the next morning. Never a word back. **** that place forever.

When the siren broke a few of us mimicked the siren through the intercom mic.

Hank is one of the all-time bests. He created a wonderful business that many of us created lifetime friendships there.

I consider Hank one of my closest friends. Us former employees have reunions, have been to weddings for each other, tailgate together, etc. Right @VeloClone, @iowast8fan?

His son played football for ISU and posts on here, his nephew was one of the top football recruits until he decided to play baseball and be a doctor.

Velo and I rode RAGBRAI together and learned we we're HJ employees, but different "classes" by a few years. Now we still tailgate with Hank a couple times a year.

I could go on and on about Hank and Happy Joe's, but I guess I already did.

What I would give for the BBQ beef with jalapenos and pickles.

Ty Stewart bought it. He managed McDonald's on Lincolnway for a while, lost his job there. Sold insurance, and did financial planning for awhile quite that and bought Valentino's. I think when Walmart started the rebuild south of that is when he sold it. Now he is a golf pro at Hyperion I believe.

When he took over it went way down hill. I think he spent more time on the golf course than he did at Valentino's.

Loved Happy Joes. Grew up with it. Such great memories. Wish it was still there to take my family.....

Hometeam was some of the greasiest Pizza I have ever had. About the only way I could eat it was to order it with a bunch of toppings otherwise it was just a big greasy mess with just 1 or 2 toppings. BTW Dominos in Ames sucked, I realize they were cheap but I'd rather eat a cheap frozen pizza from the grocery store over the crap they were making back in the late 90's and early 2000's.

Pizza Pit is still my favorite Ames place. Actually had some Pizza Pit pizza and wings at Welch Ave. Station after the win Saturday night. Always have a hard time ordering because I love everything on their menu from apps to their sandwiches too.

Pokey Stix from Gumby's were the bomb. Was sad when that place closed down. Valentinos was OK but I don't miss it. What was the name of that place that used to be between Kum & Go and whatever the name of the bar/club down the street (was the dean's list when I was there.) It was a little pricier but they had good pizza and made an awesome grinder sandwich.

I really liked Joe's by West Town Pub. Also Georges downtown. And DiVinci's in campus town. Vesuvius too. All gone from Ames now... Pizza doesn't have to be fancy to be good.

Thanks, that's it! Yeah it was delicious but on the higher priced end for college students so it was a treat when I actually got. Good pizza and besides their grinder I think they also had a really good Italian beef sandwich too.

If I remember correctly they had a mini pizza deal or something for lunch that was reasonable. Those sandwiches were good.

Rumor at the time was that Home Depot wanted to buy Hank's land, the old bowling alley and the Fox Lounge among other flood prone places on Duff.
