Ok, that's fine if a stud wants to watch from the sidelines starting October 12th. We pull their scholarship for the remainder of the semester, no more free nutrition and traveling with the team on road trips then. Sounds fair to me.
Yes that was basically my take. They leave the team to train for the combine, we wish them the best (and support the best we can to remain on good terms), it would open up a scholarship, and we would be able to pursue another player.

Schools are welcome to try this. Make sure they get their whole foot in front of the shotgun before they pull the trigger, though.

In reality, anything that's viewed as punitive to the player is not going to happen. It's just not. Schools aren't going to pull scholarships for opt outs. They're not going to try to make them pay back money. They're not going to make them pay their own way.

Because the minute a school does this, every school that they're recruiting against is going to sieze upon it and never let prospects hear the end of it. They'll get killed by the PR. It would be one of the stupidest things a school could do. It might make some fans feel better to get "revenge" on a player for daring to leave early, but no school is ever going to try something like this. Not one that plans on being successful in football.

Yes I agree with this. You would have to structure like "a combine training package" or something like that if you were going to open up a scholarship (or maybe it's more cost-effective to eat the scholarship loss).

Or maybe give a bonus package for completing the season.

Whatever the case, you want to leave on good terms. I just believe the whole standing on the sidelines or deciding to sit out the bowl game is counterproductive.

Where does your slippery slope end then? Guys are so entitled these days I could see players hanging it up 3 games into the season and riding the gravy train of free tuition and NIL the rest of the year while their teammates ate busting their arses for nothing.

Good post and I understand. But having been an ISU fan longer than Breece has been alive.....our history would dictate that Cyclone fans, coaches and players would kill to be involved in a game like last night. And here we are with players opting out. I guess maybe as fans we are being pulled in different directions and not sure to be happy for just being there, or a little upset the best team wasn't on the field.

It's the new culture of college football much like college basketball with transfers/early entree etc. so the choice is deal with it or find something else to do.

It’s possible but I don’t think it’s very likely. The games and teammates mean a lot to an overwhelming majority of kids. Do I think it’s strange that a bowl is considered significantly different than this years TCU game with a conference title out of reach? Yes, I suppose. And will we see guys hang it up early more often? I suppose. But I don’t think it’s going to happen too much.

Email Jamie and CMC about this and then post the response.

It was mentioned several times last night that Clemson had no players opt out of the game, how many pros do they have on their roster?

Bad look for a 5 star culture team to have key players sit, they put themselves above the team.
A top tier running back has more to lose than some corner back or receiver. An injury to Breece could have been devastating for his draft stock. Would I have I liked to see him play? Of course, but I understand his NFL career is much more important than the Cheez it Bowl

Meh. Who says it's a slippery slope? And if it is, it's an incredibly gradual one. We've seen a large increase in the number of bowl game opt outs but how many healthy players have actually hung it up in the regular season to prepare for the draft? Pretty low number. Feels like you're tilting at windmills a bit here. But if it increases, so be it. The NFL draft will determine whether opting out is a good move vs a bad move, and it's very much an individual measuring stick. Some guys might regret their decision to leave early. Others might not. That's just life.

Waking up and immediately running to the internet to start a thread where you know your bad takes are going to get **** on is an interesting way to start the day.
"There are already nearly double digit threads railing on the team, players and coaches. Maybe I should start another one."
