Adam Schefter on Brock Purdy's contract status (and a Tyrese Haliburton mention)

You’re not considering another option in this scenario: say they play it that way and he blows up and has an MVP caliber season? In that case 2 years from now the qb market may be even more inflated and they may have to give him 60+/year and over 300 guaranteed to keep him
That is why Dak is the highest paid QB when he is FAR from the best. Jerry waited on both of Dak's last two contracts and had to overpay both times

Then Purdy sets the market, it all is a risk, the idea is to take the lowest risk approach which would be to sign him to a deal both sides think is fair. If Purdy is the MVP, then money will not be a problem, but do you want to sign him to $55 million a year and have him play like he did last season?
Given that everyone around him was injured, his offensive line was awful, and his receivers ranked dead last in the NFL in degree of separation, I'd say he played pretty well last season.

I'll repeat what I said at the start of this thread:

If Purdy doesn't get a new contract this year and is forced to play this season for a measly $5 million with dogsh*t talent around him, his value will plummet and he'll never get what he deserves.

By making Purdy the lowest paid QB in the league the last 3 years, the 49ers have already gotten $125+ million in "free" QB talent. Plus Purdy literally saved Shanahan's and Lynch's jobs after the Trey Young fiasco.

If I were Purdy, I'd tell the 49ers they need to pay me at least $50 million/yr for 4 or more years with $150 guaranteed. Otherwise, I'm holding out.

Live in NJ, know many Giants and Jets fans… they would all be THRILLED to have Brock as their franchise qb.
I understand your situation but with all respect, the giants or the Jets?? Over my dead body.

You do realize how few franchise tags get used right? Because you essentially burn the relationship with the player.

So you are saying that instead of paying Purdy $50 mil per year for 3-4 years, they’ll tag him just to pay him j$50 mil per year anyway? Makes no sense.

This is so simple - give Purdy 4-5 years and $50-$55 mil per year and give yourself out options after 3-4 years.
How do production bonuses work in the NFL? How does it figure against the cap? If it kept the cap low If I was Purdy offer 45 million for the season, 5 million bonus for making the play offs, and then somewhere between 2 and 5 million for each round of the playoffs you advance. Shared risk and reward by both sides but I'm guessing that is not how the cap works. @Mr Janny how far am I off. LOL.

There’s a whole distinction between if the incentive is likely to be earned or not likely and they affect the cap differently. I don’t know all the specifics but I think if it’s likely to be earned then it just hits the cap right away and if not it can be spread out or moved maybe.

Not sure all the posters advocating for a holdout understand NFL rules. (a) If on a rookie contract, he could face fines of $40,000/day for not reporting. Can he afford that? (b) If he misses the whole year, he loses a year of accrued time meaning he would eventually become a restricted free agent instead of an unrestricted free agent. (c) If he sits out all year, his contract can be frozen and he would just come back year at the exact same salary.

How can the NFLPA have such a bad collective bargaining agreement in terms of how Purdy gets treated?

It's better than the old system that was paying unproven players millions that never live up to their salaries. For every player like Purdy that is underpaid, there are dozens making millions that are washouts. As great of a story as Purdy is, it's very rare, most of the players taken in the last round or were FAs do not stay long in the league if they make it at all, only about 10 to 15% or so make a roster.

Even if Brock has to play out his rookie contract, which seems less likely than him signing an extension, he'll have made over $8 million total by the end of next year.

Surely, regardless of rookie status, he is doing quite well, and he is on the threshold of making generational money for his family.
