Honestly, Brock needs to hold out to get the deal done this year. He's a great quarterback, but the team traded away virtually anyone with a pulse. It's fair to think that the team is going to struggle next year - even if Brock has a great year. He needs to cash in now so that's not hanging over him next offseason.
Absolutely. If Purdy doesn't get a new contract this year and is forced to play this season for a measly $5 million with dogsh*t talent around him, his value will plummet and he'll never get what he deserves.

By making Purdy the lowest paid QB in the league the last 3 years, the 49ers have already gotten $125+ million in "free" QB talent. Plus Purdy literally saved Shanahan's and Lynch's jobs after the Trey Young fiasco.

If I were Purdy, I'd tell the 49ers they need to pay me at least $50 million/yr for 4 or more years with $150 guaranteed. Otherwise, I'm holding out.

Not sure all the posters advocating for a holdout understand NFL rules. (a) If on a rookie contract, he could face fines of $40,000/day for not reporting. Can he afford that? (b) If he misses the whole year, he loses a year of accrued time meaning he would eventually become a restricted free agent instead of an unrestricted free agent. (c) If he sits out all year, his contract can be frozen and he would just come back year at the exact same salary.

They traded away players that aren’t nearly as good as they used to be, like Deebo. Very much a positive to move on from Deebo.

That does suck.

However, the other side is that the 49ers will essentially be forced to forfeit the entire season and, given how much the 49ers have already exploited Purdy's unfortunate circumstances, public opinion will side with Purdy rather than ownership. 49er nation will have a meltdown.

I'm worried if he holds out he might become the next Kaepernick. He deserves more but the league isn't going to pay him more than they have to.

Jerry Jones said he would sign him. Of course Dak is on the hook for a lot of money so I don't think it would happen but I can dream.
Kaepernick got blacklisted from the NFL for kneeling during the anthem, not sure how Brock's situation compares to that...

They can ride with Mac Jones for a year and see what happens. Purdy doesn’t have the leverage. Holding out could kill his career vs just kill a season for SF. And it would absolutely blow up in his face if Mac Jones goes out there and is competent

If they can’t get an extension signed, it is in Brock’s best interest to go out and play the best he possibly can.

Even if he plays poorly, his agent could angle it as just a bad year. A QB needy team would still take a flyer on him in 2026-27. Jameis Winston, Baker Mayfield, Sam Darnold kept getting opportunities

Overall I like Lynch, but his approach to contract extensions is really bizarre in my opinion. The front office seems very stand-offish and waits until the last minute to sign guys.

It would be an easy argument that Purdy probably saved Lynch his job. The Trey Lance deal was horrible and Purdy leading SF to two SuperBowls let the fans forget how badly Lynch ****** up.

Brock has leverage. Not giving him an extension effectively shoots them in the foot for next season and however many seasons in the future it takes them to find another QB that can play at his level, because there is a zero % chance he'd resign in that scenario.

It'd be incompetence to the point of malpractice.

Purdy saved both Lynch's and Shanahan's jobs. They were the two masterminds that gave the entire 49er farm away to draft a QB that hasn't even seen the field since.

The 49ers know how awful QB pergatory is in the NFL, and they don't want any part of it.

They could just franchise him next year for $40M and then franchise him again the year following

If SF is going to make Purdy play this year with only the $5 million guaranteed, and he can't afford the fines, then Brock should develop a back problem in the first week of fall camp and struggle to play up to all year because of the pain.

The only way he gets the contract protection in case of injury is get a new contract with guarantees reflective of his market value. Just getting $5 million, then the 2 years of franchise tags, he never has the guarantees he deserves for the physical risk he is taking.

Not exactly sure.
Does the contract kick in this year? If so, that isn’t as bad as some want to say. He’s stuck with this contract but if he can get it up to 25 instead, that is life security money. Then do a hold out after this year.

Something like that could kill his open market value if teams think they have a QB with a bad back or faked an injury

I don’t think people are thinking things through saying Brock should hold out or fake injuries. He doesn’t have any leverage here. All he can do is keep negotiating and play the best he possibly can.

If he plays well this year he’ll have a lot more leverage next offseason. His best option is to get a contract extension. His next best option is to go out and play good football
