Big difference in taking over a perennial conference champion and a middle of the pack team.
Who is this middle of the pack team?

The two seasons before Underwood took over at SFA they went 12-4 and 16-2 in conference and 20-12 and 27-5 overall. I would not call that a little success. He was handed a winning team as well.
My opinion. If the guidance of Iowa State's Men's Basketball program rests upon Brad Underwood, Bryce Drew, or Steve Prohm we are in trouble! So sign up T.J. and see how he does. Disappointed Hornacek didn't emerge as a serious candidate and there were no other "proven" big name coaches out there.
Buzz Williams went from what I would consider a major conference basketball program to Va Tech just last year.
Virginia Freakin Tech..
It most certainly can happen.
Just a question....I get that these are all so-called "mid-major" coaches. And I'm certainly not anti-TJ. But most of what I read is about Prohm/Underwood. Why are people not talking more about Bryce Drew? He did play in the NBA, and actually played with Fred for one year with the Bulls. He's had good success at Valpo, winning the conference this season after losing half of his scoring from the previous team, and took Maryland to the wire (lost by 3) in the NCAA tournament. So he's had NBA experience, assistant experience, and 4 years of head experience. Are people not talking about him more due to concerns of recruiting ability, playing style, personality, or what? Just curious. Again, I have no favorite in the list of four.
It's sad we have a top 10 roster and we can't find a better pool of candidates.
Who are people honestly expecting? I don't understand.
I think VT timed it perfectly because the Big East is falling apart and Buzz wanted to get out of town. Had Buzz decided to wait a year, he may have been considered a legitimate candidate for the ISU job.
While the circumstances are a tad different, your logic still makes sense. Virginia Tech has a bad basketball program and their gym is terrible (I know since I've been to the campus a few times - I'm a Virginia boy and originally wanted to go there for college but was smart enough to pick ISU instead). They also offered him less money than Marquette was paying him so it has to be possible to get a big buzz name (pun intended).
Exactly. Agree. If TJ is successful, he stays a long time. If not, he's easy to buy-out and move on in a couple years. Everyone else seems like it would really be hard to move on if it doesn't work out well. So TJ appears to be the least worst.
Gentlemen and Ladies - I hope today's discussion is a bit better than yesterday. Yes, emotions are high, but frankly, much of it is embarrassing. I applaud CW and Jeremy for putting up with everyone's ****. I have not done the analysis, but there are a select few on CF that would prefer to argue or tear down rather than build something bigger. It is okay to have your opinion, but I do not have to see it 500 ******* times. If you are not going to contribute, please STFU.

After this year, we will need to rebuild. In order to sustain our success, that will mean getting top talent and playing that talent immediately. The best way to get that talent is to bring in a big name proven coach that attracks talent by name alone (unlikely), or by having a monster year next year and getting the pub that goes along with the great year. It seems the best chance we have of keeping the current players and getting them to gel well enough next year to have a monster year is to hire TJ. There clearly are risks (no hc experience, no national name recognition being the biggest). If we have a monster year, then TJ's name is immediately nationally recognized and he known as a "good coach". If we hire a proven mid-major or mid-level major coach, we get more experience, but risk getting the greatest potential from the team. Obviously that depends on the coach's philosophy and personality. In reality, we don't know exactly what Leath and Pollard are thinking or which direction they want to go, and I'm sure they are interviewing different types to determine what seems to make the most sense. All we can do is wait for the announcement and get behind whoever is hired. It gets very old reading posts that say why TJ or any other coaching will be great or terrible - no one knows at this time.
Buzz also had a difficult relationship with his Athletic Department, sort of colleges version of the Thibs/Bulls fiasco that got ISU to this point. When Williams left it came out of no where and shocked a lot of the CBB experts.
Considering the rumors of 2 possible mystery coaching there could be a similar situation with ISU talking to them. The coaches obviously wouldn't want their names getting out with the good possibility they would return to their P5 teams after flirting with a "lateral" move.
This is what I don't get. It's not helpful, but I bet in 5 years at least one of these guys will look like a fantastic hire. Look who Floeida just hired. He'd fit right in with this pool.
Don't screw it up!
Please enlighten us with some proposals, of whom we would have a realistic shot at hiring. It's sad we have a top 10 roster and we can't find a better pool of candidates.
