Hornacek is definitely an exception. He is a top three candidate for the job if interested. I figured the post I responded too referred to Grayer. I have no problem with having former players coach, it's just that a lot aren't qualified. Not to mention we've all known people who were very good at certain things, but had no ability to teach the thing they were good at.
Top of my list Of attainable candidates..not even close.

1. Horny

2.Underwood

3. Otz

4. Doesn't matter because 3 would take it.

Dream scenario (other than retaining Fred) to pair Hornacek and TJ. And then when Hornacek bolts back to the NBA, hand the keys to TJ.
Actually, after Hornacek bolts back to the NBA, Fred will have won a couple NBA titles and will want to finish out his career at ISU. He comes back and we all ride off into the sunset together.

I came up with this list last week assuming that we would get to this point. I'm sure some will kill me for posting it when Iowa State doesn't even have a vacancy but my Twitter feed is blowing up with peeps wondering who some different candidates might be. No insider info here (unless noted). Just off the top of my head list for your entertainment/fodder.

Note: I think the only way ISU can attract a proven winner at this level at this point in time is to offer 2.5 million or more. That would be more than Hoiberg made last year. I just don't see it happening, but who knows what Jamie has up his sleeve.

My initial list...

Realistic candidates (guys who I think would consider the job for what I think it will pay)

Jared Haase, UAB head coach (former Kansas player)

Jared Haase, UAB head coach (former Kansas player)

no thanks.. he is a dooosh. I have a friend that played against him.

They nicknamed his "Haase-Hole"

Well that puts that candidate to rest then. Let us know what your friend thinks of other coaching candidates. Cant be having coaches whose names rhyme with curse words on our staff.

If Horny says no I don't think Underwood is getting proper value. His teams play a spread the floorn offense and he is a major upgrade deffensivelly. It has b=n remarkable what he has done at usfa plus has Big 12 and SEC assistant cred so knows what it takes working under Martin. and working in Texas that is a good recruiting area we under tap. I really like him as a candidate. Frankly suprise he is still available. What is his downside? He is my Hornacek fall back.

What if he has already promised the job to someone else?

Then he needs to go back on his promise. This is about the future of ISU basketball...it's his job to put the program in the best possible position. Hiring an NBA head coach who finished 2nd in the Coach of the Year voting last year is a no brainer.

At least talk to him. Maybe Hornacek uses that offer as leverage against the Suns. Fine but at least you tried. Or maybe the Suns say "go for it, we will make a run at Thibs", and Hornacek takes the job. Either way, it's a no lose situation.

How about Mick Cronin at Cincinnati? 5 straight NCAA tournament appearances and the Big 12 would be a big step up from the American Conference.

Call #1 needs to be Hornacek. He says no comment and then immediately starts to comment. If he wasn't interested at all, he'd leave it at no comment.

Keeping an NBA style and having a coach with NBA experience who was also an All-Star would at least keep the ISU fanbase excited and give us a good chance at maintaining momentum.

Then he should be tarred and feathered because saying we have no money to pay in the top 8/10 big 12 coaches for basketball iur best sport while pouring tons of money into track and golf is neglect.

I don't know why people are acting like Pollard isn't going to talk to mutiple people. Of course he's going to contact Hornacek, among others.

You can't really talk about jobs that aren't open yet. There's rules.

Jared Hasse is the biggest joke I've ever seen.

Some cyclone fans:

Hasse beats ISU = Let's hire Hasse!
