Get out of here with your facts. TM's a future sportswriter, he likes simple narratives based on well known phrases. Facts have no place in his narrative.

The other thing to take into account is that Defense used to be a lot easier to play than it is in today's game. It's harder to have a dominating defense than it used to be. Scoring is trending up. Yardage is trending up. The "Defense wins championships" cliche is exactly that. It can. But, it's not the only way.

This is relevant to the discussion....how, exactly?

Clearly, I've been proven wrong that defense is a necessity to win the Super Bowl. But I still don't think this is a good deal for the Bears, since Cutler ain't Peyton Manning or Drew Brees.

I wouldn't necessarily say you've been proven wrong. Defensive oriented teams do win the SuperBowl. Out of the last 10 years, over half of the Super Bowl winners have had top 10 Defenses, so it certainly is an important component. It's just not as strong of a component that it once was. The game has changed. Look at the Patriots first Super Bowl win. They beat the Rams by having their DB's absolutely manhandle the Rams receivers. The refs wouldn't allow that kind of treatment these days.

This is what I really meant to say.

This is my probelm with the deal. He's being paid like a franchise QB now, and I can't see when or where in his career he's played the part. I see essentially the same QB now that came into the league as a rookie - a cocky passer with a big time arm and lousy decision making skills. And at 31 years old, I don't expect him to change now. Why overpay for an above average quarterback who isn't going to get you to that upper echelon in the NFL? A more reasonable solution would have been to retain McCown as an insurance policy and draft a prospect. The QB class is deep enough this year that a top five or ten pick is not necessary to get a potential franchise QB.

There's a lot of crappy sportswriters that don't worry about facts and just make the story fit their narrative. You seem like you will fit right in with those guys.

My main take away from Janny's stats is that if you want to win a Super Bowl, you need to be really good on at least one side of the ball. The Bears have a really good offense, why would you want to downgrade on that side of the ball when there is no guarantee your defense is going to become an elite defense any time soon?

The exception being last year's Ravens who weren't terribly good at anything, although Flacco played incredible during the playoffs. I think you can also put the Giants most recent Superbowl in that category, too. Defense played pretty bad all year, but stepped it up dramatically in the playoffs.

It's too bad the OP wasn't right.
The problem with the Bears is their horrible defense not their above average QB. That's like saying Sam Richardson is the reason ISU is 2-5. Cutler, Forte and Marshall are the only reason the Bears have any wins.

I love watching Bears fans tear Cutler apart and I can't wait until he leaves and they are even worse off for it.

Go ahead, force your top 10 QB out and see where it gets you.

This Bears fan likes Cutler just fine, in fact I'm a Jay Cutler fan.

The day the Bears defense let's anyone hang 51 points on them is the day you fire the DC and/or the HC.

The Bears...FML.

Bears have a below average or terrible QB(s) for 10 years....fans complain.

Bears get an above average QB who is setting all of the franchise passing records....fans complain.

I sense a theme.

Cutler is 7th in total passing yards. 6th in passing TDs.

He does have 8 INT which is less than Andrew Luck and the same as Matt Ryan (one more than Brees, Flacco, and Stafford).

And Cutler is the problem?? Come on...

The only thing I would add is that you COULD pin the Buffalo, Carolina and Miami loses on Jay. Some bad interceptions in those games, and the Miami game he looked horrible. At the same time, Jay deserves all the credit in the world for the 3 wins.

Rodgers Manning
Luck
Rivers
Wilson
Newton
Brady (questionable right now, depends on season or current play)
Brees

Anyone else clearly a better QB than Cutler?
