The list of teams that focused on offense and won the SB is a helluva lot shorter.
The Ravens didn't have good offenses in either of their SB seasons. The Bucs offense was okay. The Pats offense wasn't anything special when they were winning titles (lately it's been awesome, yet they've got no hardware). And I still think that the Bears have the weapons offensively to make an average quarterback look good and have that be good enough, IF their defense is good.
Obviously, the Bears aren't listening to me (and I wouldn't expect them to). But I don't think this deal is going to pay off for them.
Let's look at the last 10 years:
2012 Ravens Offense 16th. Defense 17th
2011 Giants Offense 8th. Defense 27th
2010 Packers Offense 10th. Defense 2nd
2009 Saints Offense 1st. Defense 25th
2008 Steelers Offense 22nd. Defense 1st
2007 Giants Offense 16th. Defense 7th
2006 Colts Offense 3rd. Defense 21st
2005 Steelers Offense 15th. Defense 4th
2004 Patriots Offense 4th. Defense 9th.
2003 Patriots Offense 17th. Defense 7th.
So where does that leave us?
3 teams with basically balance
3 teams with an offensive focus
4 teams with a defensive focus
Seems pretty balanced to me. Obviously the best choice is to have both a good offense and defense, but if a team only focuses on one side of the ball, it doesn't seem to matter a whole lot whether it's offense or defense. Both ways have won Super Bowls.
