What's Gary Thompson saying......

about the latest exodus from our beloved university?

I wonder if he might be thinkling of his famous broadcast saying -- "Stop the bleeding!!".

Anybody hear Gary comment on the reason why so players are leaving the program?

I am curious, everyone believes that Thompson has a lot of stroke within the athletic department but where does this stroke come from...is it his stature as a great ex-player, as a broadcaster, or as a donor.

Specifically, I would like to know if he is really a big donor or if he is just high profile primarily because of his past as a player and broadcaster...does anyone know? Honest question.

Gary Thompson Oil has a luxury box at Jack Trice. I do not wish to disclose anymore information. Can't get any more CF infractions.

Mac is going to be our coach for a long time...Might as well get on board.

So, here's a question for you in turn; if what you write is true, then why should we get on board? What, other than beating Kansas State, has Greg McDermott shown to us as fans to earn our unconditional support?

I am not a McD hater. I loved him at UNI, and I still go on record as feeling he is a good game coach, but I also felt going into this last season that the jury was still out on him with a roster that was completely his and with some increased expectations as well due to an upgrade in talent. This season was pretty much an abysmal failure, and while we did have injuries and unexpected departures to deal with, those reasons can go only go so far in explaning our struggles.

I was hopeful for a few days after the win at Kansas State. Finally, I had thought to myself, this is what Iowa State basketball can look like under McD. I wasn't even that upset after the Big 12 tournament loss to Texas. We played well for the most part and just lost to a better team.

However, hearing the news about Hamilton transferring was the straw that broke the camel's back for me. Objectively and subjectively, I cannot continue to invest hope and energy in supporting a program that I no longer have any hope for, based on disappointment and never-ending roster attrition.

Look, I respect your loyalty to McD, I really do. But, at least for me, you need to give me something to go on other than just "be on board, he'll be here for a while".

This is one ship I definitely don't want to be on board of anymore.

I have spoken to other GIANTS in the ISU program and they are NOT happy with the status of the entire program!

If that were the case a change would have been made. Those in the athletic dept still think Mac is the guy.

Last interview I heard with Gary is that he thinks Mac can get it done.

It would be nice if Chris W could interview him for CF.

I think it is all those things. He and his company have been donors for many years......now how large those donations are, I have no idea. He was very well respected as a broadcaster. He was an All-Amercian at ISU in two sports.......which many people don't realize. He has served as a governor on the board of the ISU Foundation. He is probably as influential as any alum.

When saying something like "I have spoken to other giants" without naming who they are, you are asking people to trust you. When it is your first overall post, there is no trust there, so it is perfectly reasonable to point out that the person shouldn't be trusted because they have no history here.

Well, if he had said bball god instead of giants, we may not have thought it was a fball or baseball thread.

I would say his donations have been pretty hefty. Probably the ONLY thing I would disagree with you on this is he is probably as influential as any alum. I think of all the alums, he is probably one of the top 10 -- if not top five -- most influential.

Considering he was the ONLY person Pollard consulting while hiring GM, I would say GT is more influential than any other person in MBB- alum or not.

The one thing that I will say, is that in the short term losing ham is a big deal, but Not nearly as detrimental as our past losses. We deeply need stability in the backcourt, if Mac is ever going to have even a chance of turning things around in any long term respect.

I'm not saying that he can or he can't get it turned around, but Mac can bring big guys along prety quickly at least to a serviceable level. What he can not do is bring a guard allong quickly. DG and Colvin need to help step up the learning curve for both themselves and future guards.

Another thing that I'm not sure Mac does well is take the bigs past serviceable. So in that respect. I can see us not being deeply affected by the loss of Ham. Dendy can be special and i think will be able to bring something to the table that ham never has and that is aggressiveness. Don't get me wrong, I wish he had stayed. But I think DG would have hurt more. Colin would hurt about the same or more, and Christopherson would hurt more. JVB and Dendy can pick up at least a good portion of the slack, and hopefully we can find a big capeable of getting after it on the boards.

Well, this mess is obviously Gary Thompson's fault. His jersey should be removed from the rafters of Hilton! :jimlad:

Not a slam at your post, gogagig, just at those who have been second guessing the hiring of GMac. I can understand second guessing keeping him, but I find second guessing the hiring a little ridiculous.

And to be fair to Greg Mcdermott, I do think he deserves another year or two to prove himself with all the balony he's had to go through.

Baloney he's had to go through?

-Like having to acquire and retain B12 caliber talent in order to compete in the B12?

-Like having to compete against B12 caliber coaches?

Gary would be saying nothing. He is a gentlemen. He knows a decision has been made and he will support it. For those of you who have never spoken to him face to face, it is a pleasure. Speak to him once, and he will never forget your name, regardless of how frequently you speak.
Bottom line. I would be shocked if he did not maintain his same level of integrity, regardless of the speculation.

Yes, there has been baloney, but how much of has McD cut himself?

Year to year, it seems he has to be behind the baloney knife for some of these guys leaving.

As far as being a gentleman, didn't the Rocket critique WM for having no control?

If you consider another twelve months a long time then I guess so. Trust me, to a lot of Cyclone fans the next twelve months he is still coach will seem like 12 years.
