Statistical Comparison

PRPG!: ISU 1.8 > Texas 1.5
BPM: ISU 3.7 >>> Texas 1.0 (DBPM down from 3.4 to 0.2)
EFG: Texas 46.6% > ISU 44.3%
TS%: Texas 49.8% > 47.5%
Assist Rate: ISU 32.3 >>> Texas 15.7
Steal Rate: ISU 3.8 >> Texas 1.6
3PT: Texas 30.8% > ISU 27.4%

A lot of the talk surrounding Tyrese's transfer was losing out on his potential. Many thought he was ready to explode into an All-American type player. He not only hasn't improved but he might be a slightly worse player at Texas than his freshmen year at ISU. He is a similar player as a scorer (even though he plays in a way better offense now), less of a distributor (assists are way down and turnover rate is similar), and has a significantly less of an impact defensively.

Iowa State is literally the #1 basketball program on earth at producing NBA point guards right now.

All Star prototype pure point guard for Pacers, leading earth in assists currently
Starting prototype pure point guard for Wizards, 3rd in assists in Big 12 history
Bench player combo guard for Jazz who mostly plays point guard when he gets minutes
2 Way player combo guard for Bucks

The idea that a point guard can't develop at ISU is ridiculous. It's like saying corn can't grow in Iowa.

You could also add that Lipsey as a true freshman is #4 in Big 12 in assists and #3 in Big 12 in steals. Barring injury it's pretty much a guarantee he will at some point lead Big 12 in assists and steals and be the top pure point guard in Big 12.

He got a bag of cash. That's cool. That's fine. They are all professional players now who don't need to be embarrassed of being pros. Just stop lying that it was about anything else, every jaw dropping play from Haliburton, Morris and Lipsey makes it embarrassing to suggest it was anything but bag-o-cash.

If true, while a couple purchases won't put much of a dent, it does speak to potential red flag behavior/relationship with money vs managing it well.

I truly do want him to live a good life particularly after what he has endured.

From what he's shown, that would be the biggest check he will receive in his life. G-league players earn 1/10 on average
If that one purchase, which could be less than 1% of those funds, would be enough to raise red flags for you then it has a lot more to do with your preconceived notions of Hunter than any facts that you have. It's like someone has a hundred dollars and decides they'll splurge on a pop and bag of chips and that raises red flags for you.

It's pretty clear that Hunter is not in a good spot and it shows. His game has not improved much from last year and actually think the metrics would indicate a drop off. Unfortunately he got bad advice and not sure what the future holds for him. Wouldn't be surprised if he transferred again

I'm coming from the angle of seeing relatives spend student loans on spring break trips and then complain about their debts 20+ years later.

I'm not sure what preconceived notions you are trying to apply to me. I hope it's that you have the same feeling I do about NIL and that it's these students need better guidance to handle these windfalls and people looking to help them not simply get a cut as an agent/manager

He needed to find a better thing to say than he did, but you can’t seriously be recommending these guys say they left because of the money. You can’t say that really, yet. In the NBA money is an acceptable reason, college isn’t there.

Most places have guidance available as part of their selling point now I believe.

He's good, not great. He has one big game out of every 10 or 12. Him blowing up in the first round of the NCAA Tourney on national stage last year was the anomaly, not the norm. We all knew it. Texas didn't. He's shooting 38 % right now. He's never been a great shooter.

It's only not there yet because it's year one of them all being free agent pros.

If 2-3 years down the road they all still have to make up insane lies about why they are transferring it will hurt college sports a lot more than if they told the truth. The reasons Hunter gave make sense for Holmes and Osun whether they got NIL money or not...the reasons Hunter gave are laughable and we'll all be better off (especially the athletes) when the truth is palatable.

It's also just not healthy for the athletes mentally to feel such shame. Hunter shouldn't have to feel so guilty that he's a pro athlete any more than James Harden should have to play for free.

If true, that's really unfortunate. See my previous comment regarding $500,000 being transformational if well managed.
He could make that yearly in Europe after he left Ames. Might not even sign a decent European contract if this current play keeps up.

in watching the KU game last night it seems evident Tyrese doesn't really have a clue on the offensive end.

For most of the game be just stood around the 3 point line, constantly begging for the ball but doing little to really get open. Tyrese's weaknesses when left were mostly fundamental: when to shoot, when to drive, and when to kick it back out. He was also abysmal at finishing near the rim as he did a poor job of taking angles and shielding the ball (basically the opposite of Lindsey). His outside shot was also inconsistent but that's typical for a freshman that wasn't known as a shooter anyway.

It's obvious is is still extremely explosive and has some very quick hands on the defensive end but he looks completely lost. If his goal was immediate guaranteed money maybe it was the right move. He he has career aspirations and really wanted to improve as a player to where he could cash in as a professional this looks like a terrible move for him.

Texas has all the athletes in the world but the hero ball leaves them short on fundamentals. They could possibly have zero losses in conference if they had any concept of shot selection and team work. The talent is scary but it's like watching an NBA game full of isos. Who ever gets the first pass is looking to score no matter what. They shot themselves out of the KU game and our game here.

I think Tyrese made a mistake. Luckily we are probably much better off for it.

Beard had produced a stable of NBA point guards?

Pretty sure Otz was recruiter for Monte and coached him at least a year.

The idea that Texas was more of a path to the NBA just doesn't makes sense coming off a Sweet 16. Especially when you'd be sharing time more at your position rather than being "the man".

It was cash, I wish he could say it was cash and didn't need to feel awkward about it. I know you'd never agree with me if I said water is wet.

He's going to be fine even if he doesn't pick up a basketball again after college. He will presumably leave with a college degree, zero debt, and whatever he has earned through NIL. That's better than 99% of people coming out of college. And just being a former athlete at UT will open doors for him that the average person won't get. You have to try really hard to screw that up. The hand wringing people have over student athletes getting some money is laughable.

I may need to read the game threads at Texas more often. pretty entertaining. They did come down pretty hard on Hunter for several pages.

Also this later on:

Sure, but Hunter also had more turnovers.

Agree. TH could have made a better choice.

Many forget, however, that Texas is still in first place in the toughest conference in the county. Many posts make it sound like they are a train wreak.

I understand Iowa St fans piling on Hunter and his struggles, but let's not forget that the coach that recruited him, the guy that 2 months ago was considered a top 10 coach, is no longer there.

Yeah, their team is doing great given circumstances.

I think people are accurately pointing out it's not a situation like Holmes where he actually gave his basketball future a gigantic edge going forward. He's getting whatever cash Texas gave him, not propelling his stock for future pro level play be that Europe, G League or whatever.

Not saying Holmes is NBA prospect, but he has elevated his profile DRAMATICALLY with his transfer move. Hunter really hasn't, probably the opposite.

They are one of those 'beautiful disasters' where they don't play with a lot of structure yet have the athletes and the talent to get to the rim, hit ridiculous shots, and play good defense (sometimes outstanding) in long enough stretches to 'make it work'.

I just can't help but feeling Texas could have won both in Lawrence and in Ames (games much closer at the end at least) if they wouldn't force so many unecessary contested shots. Not only do they not score but the rebounds often lead to transition or poor half court defense set up going the other way. They basically bury themselves.

NBA teams do not run isolation plays very frequently. Last stats I saw showed that only like 2 teams use it around 20% of the time, and the large majority are under 10%. Unless you have an extremely talented iso player, it's much more efficient to run your offense and generate good looks. (Like low single-digit number of players are actually efficient in iso play.) Isolation usually is a result of good defense taking away the ran set play and needing to get a shot off.

What Texas is doing is rolling the ball our there and trying to out-talent its way to wins.

He's getting similar numbers to last year, but his defense is off a bit. His defense was better last year because of the defense of his teammates.
