The consistent quality of Coach Campbell

Campbell is the best football coach in ISU history, there is no doubt and he deserves that credit. I would like to see him adjust the way he gameplans for September non-conference games, especially against Iowa. That's about all I can ask considering what he's accomplished.

I almost hesitated posting here. The last time I posted something about Campbell I either didn't make my point well enough or others misinterpreted what I said.

My "expectations" for ISU is to win 8-10 games a year and go to a good bowl (no offense to the Liberty Bowl, but that one is played out as far as I am concerned)

To be clear, those are my expectations. Am I disappointed if ISU wins only 7 games? Yes. Am I disappointed in Campbell as a coach? No.

I don't know if the Iowa State football program has a curse or what, but little things happen that has prevented Campbell and Iowa State from picking up that extra much needed win or two -- the debacle at Snyder's "last game" at K-State (two picked up flags and motion by K-State on the winning touchdown play), a punt return getting called back against Kansas last season because ref ruled the runner went out of bounds when clearly he did not, a dropped TD pass by a normally sure-handed receiver against Texas, etc.

The argument would be good teams overcome those calls. True, but when the margin is slim between winning and losing for a team like Iowa State those calls are killers.

Wouldn't trade Campbell for any coach right now. I still like to see Iowa State win 8-10 games consistently. That is just me
Yeah, little things like a global pandemic. Would have easily had 10 wins in 2020. Not much Campbell can do about that.

The statistics prove from several angles that CMC is the best coach we’ve had that has stayed. Earl Bruce can be argued that his record was headed that way but he didn’t stick around long enough. I would guess that the traditional slow start to the season is CMC’s weak area……along with his penchant for wearing black and black uni’s.

Here we go.

That season wasn't much unlike others (slow start, gradually better, pretty good by the end), just shortened and some wins looked better because the opponents were dealing with Covid issues.

So, basically...

Campbell doesn't always win but he's almost never blown out.

Such huge blowouts used to be common and are now rare -- went from something like four times per season in the pre-Campbell era down to something like once per season.

Campbell would really benefit from either some luck or some skill in close games.

I actually think he has gotten better at this the past couple years, albeit from a very low base.

The decision that special teams matters has helped a lot. The in-game coaching, the situational "feel" for the game, is better than it was. Its still not a strength. But its better.

CMC does seem to actually practice the "sharpen the saw" habit.

Yeah, here we go.

ISU's best season doesn't count because other teams were struggling with a pandemic. I could have sworn ISU had to contend with the same pandemic.

If he finds a way to win 1-score games more consistently (it's literally his most common outcome here at ISU) and beat rivals more consistently, it's game over. I wouldn't want to have anyone else as our coach even with those dings, but he'll be statue-worthy if these improve

He didn’t say it didn’t count but people shouldn’t automatically assume 10 wins was a guarantee that year.

Campbell’s a little like my wife - he does things that drive me up the f*cking wall but I wouldn’t trade him for anyone
There's something to that. When we were a laughing stock, it was easy to laugh with people and dismiss our own program. Back to the tailgate! Now that we're competitive, each mistake is amplified in it's impact in the outcome. So even making fewer/smaller mistakes today FEELS worse because it's easier to connect them to a loss.

But people certainly care, as evidenced by our crowds, ticket sales, social media presence, etc.

(Not to derail the thread, but you could say the same for Pollard. Love him or hate him, there is no doubt he's got an enormous legacy in making our AD and brand what it is today.)

You forgot one. They picked up an offensive PI flag in the drive where KState scored to get back into the game. That score came with about 6 minutes left in the game. That is in addition to the personal foul flag on Kempt and the PI on Lazard. That's 3 picked up flags in the 4th Q alone. I think there was another one much earlier in the game but I can't remember what it was. And you already mentioned the blatant missed false start on the TD pass to end the game.

It can't be underestimated how different everything feels under Coach Campbell. I personally didn't slide into depression and accept a regression after the 2022 season. Instead I just knew, well Campbell will have us back rocking the next year. As a longtime Cyclone fan, this difference in mindset is huge.

Yes they did and it was fun as heck but how can you concretely know they're getting 10 wins in a normal scheduled season?

Yep I've been very (internet) vocal about some things that I simply haven't liked but I can't argue with the overall results over his tenure.

I now expect 7ish+ wins a season and quite frankly that's fine with me especially since the losses are generally still hard fought games.

I believe it was a normal scheduled season, except for the fact that ISU had one non conference game (a sure win) cancelled which would have given them a 10 win season.

I believe the cancelled game was against UNLV which Iowa State would have been heavily favored against, so I'd say 10 wins was about as close to a guarantee as you can get.
