So, who is your rival?

Yeah KU's rival is Mizzou, no question, even though they dont play each other anymore. They still actively root against each other at any cost. There was a lot of smack talk going on before their exhibition basketball game this year, and a lot of salty Mizzou fans after Mizzou lost (reminder, it was an exhibition game)

It’s too bad that we lost some pretty damn good rivalries from realignment

Oklahoma - Nebraska
Texas - A&M
WVU- Pitt ( not a big 12 rivalry but that one was pretty heated)

Edit: forgot KU - Misery

Not sure anyone under a certain age remembers just how good the OU-Nebraska rivalry was.

Old Big 8. Wishbone. Cut off jerseys. Top programs facing off for a trip to the Orange Bowl

It really was one of the best

I like surly's definition of a rival. I don't understand all interstate rivalries. I get KU-Miz because of Kansas City, but how often do Michigan and Ohio State fans actually see each other? They can say they hate each other all they want, but on-field hate can only go so far. Like ISU-KSU football or ISU-KU basketball. I consider them rivals of sorts, but since I live in Iowa, the Iowa game is much more emotionally relevant since I interact with Iowa fans all the time. It's more emotional for me than a rational objectification of what games are most important, or what would be the biggest upset.

I don't think OSU has a real one. Sure, OU is the one team we want to beat more than anyone else, but they own us in football and have a winning record against us in basketball. We're just another win to them. Hell, you'll see their fans do the upside down longhorn hand thing even at OSU/OU games.

Here's how I see it for teams that actually play one another. But I define a rival as the team you least want to lose to rather than who you most want to beat. Because a loss hurts for a long time while a win is mostly a passing emotional high.

ISU - Iowa
K-State - Ku
Ku (although they deny it) - K-State
OU - Texas
Texas - OU
oSu - OU
TxT - IDK but guessing Texas
Baylor - TCU
TCU - Baylor (perhaps Texas)
WVU (hoops dominates) - Ku

Denying an obvious rival is your rival means 100% that's a heated rivalry from the side denying it the strongest.

A rivalry has to be felt by both sides. As much as it pains most of us to say it, Iowa fits that bill more than anyone. The dislike runs both ways. That doesn't mean we'd rather beat them than a conference foe, though. Most of us just want a win to shut the other fans up.

As far as a conference rival, I honestly don't see one. KU doesn't see us as a rival in basketball. Hoiberg made some of their fanbase a little anxious, but that's about it. If I had to name one, I think they enjoy beating KSU more than anyone because they don't want to lose that in-state battleground. With Wichita State asserting themselves, KU doesn't want to be perceived as being 2nd or even third best.

In terms of football, I don't know any team that considers us as a rival yet. If we can flip the script on KSU, I think they would be our most likely option, but losing 10 in a row does not make a good rivalry.

KU basketball fans despise us. It's not a rivalry in the sense that we're a threat, but it's easily the most intense and animosity laden series in Big 12 basketball, and I don't think that's even a debate.

In football, I see Iowa and KSU as rivals. Iowa is the more traditional hatred, and KSU is a more of a respectful "we've played each other forever" kind of deal. Farmageddon is a heated contest every year, and the game I want to win more than any other. Iowa has more animosity.

You guys are definitely in a weird spot, much like KSU. When your in-state rival has a more intense out of state rival, it creates a weird dynamic.

Iowa fans of a certain generation, that remember when ISU/Iowa didn't play, consider Minnesota their chief rival. Anyone under the age of 50 doesn't, but that dynamic once existed as well.

Shouldn't the team that destroyed your dream season get some mention here?
And the way our guys have messed with your basketball teams? Come on, man. Has to be ISU.

Iowa. My wife and step kids (basically her whole side of the family) are all Iowa fans. My daughter, her husband and I are all Iowa State grads.

I have seen them do that in Jack Trice and been in their stadium and watched their fans do it while playing ISU. I have also seen them do it on TV when playing all different opponents. I just don't think they realize how stupid and obsessed it is.

Nah, no animosity here. You have to remember that I'm an OSU fan. Crushed hopes and dreams are in our DNA. Many of us kept waiting for the shoe to drop during the season. It happened to be against you. Heck, had we beaten you, OU very well might have beaten the crap out of us the next week. Younger OSU fans have grown up with a successful program, so they really expect the team to do well. It's funny to see the younger ones ***** about a crappy bowl, not knowing that for a long time no bowl was the norm.

The way you guys messed with our basketball teams? Well, the way I see it, you were just getting payback for the 24 year winless streak in GIA (that streak still baffles me). In some sense though, we should thank you for the 4-5 year win streak against us that you were on, as it helped get rid of Ford.

You speak the truth. The best part is that many OU fans buy the official Longhorn sticker and put it upside down on their bumper. That means they are funding the UT athletic department to do so.

I wish CMC would go Bill McCartney (CU) and just pick a team to go after to start a rivalry in conference. Pretty sure he did that for Nebraska. Even if they don't feel it, be a thorn in their side at the least.

That works, and my apologies for the triple post. My computer acted funny and I didn't think they went through.

Live near and work with a lot of KU fans. I dont know a single one that despises ISU. The only school they despise is Missouri. Most of them respect ISU, and note that its been a really fun series as of late. Most KU fans I know dont really seem to care about KSU and talk very little about them. .

Those KSU - KU series are very strange to say the least. So one sided in football and pretty much just as one sided the other way in basketball. I could see how they might not cause as much excitement as truly competitive series might.
