I think you were supposed to think it was a countdown to lily saying she's pregnant. Up to and including Lily getting out of the cab, so you get hit with a sack of bricks when she says his dad died.
Pretty sure I read somewhere that this is what Jason Segal thought as going to happen. To get a more genuine reaction he wasnt told and/or was given an alternate script. This may just be internet lore, but it's very beleivable.

That's what i've read as well. "i'm not ready for this" was as much about the scene as it was Segel's reaction to the script

Testifying
Not sure if I’d say it hit me that hard, but Mags Bennet in the season finale of Justified was pretty epic. That show was so much fun. I just freaking loved it.
In what I consider to be a great series, she was probably the best actor/actress on it.

Glenn in the Walking Dead. Mostly because I felt that the show never really recovered from the moment. So my sadness was more the loss of a great show than the loss of a great character (Glenn was fine)

That's a good one. I actually quit watching the show after that. Didn't even realize he was my favorite character, but he was. Also, GoT had some really tough ones...that's kind of the unofficial theme of the show I guess. Ned Stark was a tough one to watch. And Hodor. And the Red Wedding.

Some great answers here.

A lot of talk on animation, both sad and fun. Grimes death on the Simpsons is in my top 10 favorite episodes. Also the Jurassic Park episode of Futurama probably tops it for me.

Someone mentioned a Last Of Us series coming to HBO, and I'm guessing that's a video game spinoff.

Here was an animated death I remember from childhood. IIRC it was at the end of one of the disc's.

She wasn’t a main character but I thought the death of Negan’s wife in Walking Dead was really sad.

There were some great single season characters. She was probably the best, Michael Rappaport was pretty awesome too.

The Des
John Ritter's character on 8 Simple Rules after Ritter's real life passing.
****, John Ritter's passing was an episode on Scrubs as well. Didn't hit quite as hard, but really showed that different people can grieve differently.

I thought I was the last NYPD Blue fan on earth. Glad to know I’m not. The death of Bobby Simone hit really hard.
