It's actually not interesting because he gives no details. It's like reading a tweet and assuming a kid wants to transfer even though he's just sad because he lost a game on X-Box. Royce tells us nothing so any judgement is kind of a waste of time.

I'm a huge Royce fan and got to know him some when he was here, but I agree this is a bit odd. You can't throw your team under the bus without a hint more details. What are the doctors recommending that ISU went along with but they won't? It is SUCH a slippery slope. I mean, a doctor COULD say, "The transition to moving to a different town to play D-league will make Royce extremely anxious, I recommend that not be what's best for him." (for an example...I know, a stretch, but you get me).

He keeps throwing around "unsafe." Yes, if you worked a job and were asked to clean the windows on a 20 story building and they throw you a rope, not safe. If they provide all equipment that meets standards and you say you have a fear of heights, there comes a point that that was part of the job, etc.

I feel like, at some point, this is just going to break, he'll be out money, his twitter followers will drop to none, and what will he have then?

I would do anything to have an honest talk with CFH to hear his thoughts.

Well given his results on the court I am pretty much okay with how he was handled at ISU.. Wish he would have stuck around 1 more year so we could have coddled him some more.

Man I wish Royce would have stayed another year at ISU. Not just for the quality of the team (although they could certainly be 13-0 right now if he were still here) but also for the opportunity for him to mature some in a safe environment before entering the "real world." I think he jumped too early.

Good point. Obviously we all would have LOVED his basketball skills around, but knowing what we know now, it would have been nice for him to mature and maybe have Hoiberg help him further understand what could come at the next level. My guess is his draft stock would have went up (more money) and if he could transition to a team, a big second contract.

I just hope the "details" come out at some point. I just can't understand what conditions they are not meeting that we met here? I also just wonder what he didn't know about the league (and himself) that lead him to believe he'd be good to leave, but then this happens?

Agreed, he would have lost some draft status in doing so but I bet it would have worked out better for all parties. But like other posters have said, he is cryptic with his tweets so no one really knows what his issues are.

When I was a child my Mommy used to hug me and kiss me and told me things would be okay. Once I started getting a paycheck I had to actually start earning my keep from the employer who took a chance at hiring a young kid out of school.

I don't see how staying another year in Ames would have helped him mature and prepare for the NBA. I think people keep overlooking how much Fred had personally invested in seeing Royce succeed. He was taking over a struggling program with absolutely no head coaching experience and one of his first moves was to take a huge chance on kid with major character issues who had been kicked off Minnesota's team. Royce was the kind of elite talent needed to jump start a program, how many games does ISU win last year without him, maybe 15?, but he also was a huge risk.

It would make sense that Fred and his staff would do whatever was necessary to keep Royce happy during his time in Ames. If Royce would have stayed another year, I don't see any reason why he would have to mature, if anything he would have probably even more leeway to do whatever he wanted, and his own set of rules.

The Rockets are not in a position where they have that much invested in Royce. Yeah they spent on a first round pick on him, but they also had two other first round picks. He's not James Harden, he's a guy who might have been a nice player off the bench, he's not a franchise cornerstone. We've seen from Royce's past at Minnesota and in high school that when things don't go his way, he doesn't handle it in the best manner. I think he's just in the process of learning, in a very public way, that the Rockets don't need him at all and I don't see how another year at ISU would have prepared him for that.

I'm very disappointed for Royce. He has talent beyond belief, yet emotionally he wasn't ready to make the jump to NBA. I don't know what our staff did for counseling. I'm sure it was better than what the Rockets have provided because he PLAYED for our team. Yet most of us know that there is a world of difference between college jobs and our life afterward. Still I wonder if the Cyclone staff could have helped just a little more by counseling Royce to stay at ISU for another year for the sake of emotional maturity?

To be fair, Fred was always saying that he needed to go but that was probably because he knew he was leaving anyway.

There was some interview just before Royce declared where he dropped the idea that turning pro might be better for the ISU team and avoid chemistry issues with this year's team. It confused us then, and it's been a curiosity ever since.

It really might be best for us in particular that this is happening in Houston, although this is a sad story.

I unfollowed him fairly recently.

I heard, from a source, that Royce was "uncoachable". I heard this last year before the first game and alwayas thought about poking fun at the guy who told me. He may have been right, at that particular time, and the staff figured out how to handle it. Ultimately, it may not have even been true but the guy had absolutely no reason to lie. It was at that same time that he told me Sledge was a "miss" by the staff and would ultimately transfer.
