What I find astounding is that Iowa fans saying the athletic department handled a lot of the settlement, as though we shouldn’t worry about $6 million that the athletic department paid. If you don’t feel bad that the U of I shelled out money from one of the richest college TV contracts ever and didn’t spend it on student-athletes tells me that Iowa does not deserve to be in the Big 10. If they don’t need the money why are you in that conference? I’m sure Northwestern and Purdue could spend it more wisely. Good night, UNI could run its whole athletic department off what Barta has shelled out of his department in discrimination alone.

Let's see, the University of Iowa just cost tax payers $2 million to pay for their discrimination of black athletes, but the president of the University of Iowa feels no obligation to respond to the public.

It's the Iowa way.

The lawyer's response to Ferentz's statement:
“It is disappointing that in the wake of this settlement, Kirk Ferentz continues to claim that he and his coaches did nothing wrong,” said Solomon-Simmons, a former football player at Oklahoma. “This is refuted by the (July 2020) Husch Blackwell Law Firm Report that his own athletics department commissioned and paid for."
“Kirk Ferentz's unwillingness to accept responsibility for his actions and those actions of his subordinates shows that as long as Kirk Ferentz is in charge at Iowa, Black players will be at risk for harassment, bullying, race-based threats and retaliation that will deprive them of a meaningful opportunity to pursue a high-quality education while competing at the highest level of collegiate athletics."
“A racially hostile football program is Kirk Ferentz’s legacy. That is why we strongly hope that University of Iowa President Dr. Barbara J. Wilson listens to Iowa State Treasurer Roby Smith who encouraged Iowa to 're-examine relationships with (athletics director) Gary Barta, Brian Ferentz, and others named.'
“We also hope that this litigation and settlement will cause all other university athletic programs to reevaluate their policies, environment and culture to ensure that they are just, inclusive, and equitable for Black student-athletes.”
The Iowa legislator's comments:
“We’ve got a stench hanging over our great university and it’s called Gary Barta,” Sweeney said. “In 16 years of his tenure, he has cost the university millions of dollars.”
The University of Iowa President's response for an interview request:
"We are not interested."
This is the Iowa way.

Had a conversation with a gal who's son is in a manager for the Iowa men's basketball team ( bit my tongue and had a few questions to ask, but I was polite to her and let her talk about her son. She knew nothing of the lawsuit though and taxpayers being on the hook for $2 mil.

She did mention that her son was with Barta when the Orange Crush ticket scandal happen. She just commented that the PA announer gave a shout out to the Cedar Rapids Boy's and Girls club.

Technically, Iowa's tax payers are coughing up $2 million to bail out the Board of Regents for their role in allowing the University of Iowa to create a culture of racism within their athletic department. That's why the state is on the hook for this payment. So shouldn't someone at the BOR Office be held accountable?
How about we just posthumously censure Marvin Pomerantz?

Excellent response. Should do wonders for diverse recruiting efforts at ToE.

I will never understand how anyone doesn’t like Sand. I’m assuming it’s the letter in front of his name. He’s been a great auditor regardless of party affiliation.

My wife, who is an auditor with her CPA, is irked by the fact he doesn't have his CPA. He can't legally sign off on any audits without that, or something like that. It's kinda like a Sheriff not being able to carry a gun. Or a BBQ Pitmaster who can't eat meat.

Other than that, I don't disagree with much of his approach to things.

Just heard part of an interview w Sand on KXEL. I missed most of it, but one thing he did say at the end, he was concerned the UofI hadn't had this lawsuit made "class action". Meaning basically, they are still open to further lawsuits by others who can allege unfair discrimination.

So if you were borderline on joining the initial suit, and didn't, but now think "hey those guys got $4M, what could I get?" you can still sue. And really, from a position of strength, as they already settled once.

Not being a lawyer, that seems like a really basic error by the UofI legal team. But then they have fought multiple suits for the AD and lost rather than settle. Probably shouldn't be shocked they finally decided to settle one and still screwed it up.

You have to hand it to University of Iowa leadership: they have a knack for taking a really bad situation and making it a whole lot worse.

Yep. The audacity of the University of Iowa's president to simply say "go away" to the public after requiring them to pay $2 million for her university's discrimination of blacks is impressive. Basically a big ole middle finger to all you tax payers.

They should put a warning in the locker room at Kinnick and also give it to every recruit:
"Under KF, Black players are at risk for harassment, bullying, race-based threats and retaliation that will deprive them of a meaningful opportunity to pursue a high-quality education while competing at the highest level of collegiate athletics."

This needs to be a surgeon general's warning that appears at the top of the University of Iowa's admission application.

That just sounds like Sand doesn't know what he is talking about.

First and foremost, it is an fu to the media which is usually in lock-step with universities.
