I think Prime Rib is a little overrated personally, would rather have a nice ribeye or porterhouse. Prime rib is from the standing rib roast. Get a big slab, salt & pepper like crazy...cut some slits and slide garlic into the wholes, fill with rosemary. Roast til juices come out clear...great stuff. Standing rib roast makes decent steaks too when cut and grilled.

I was given a prime rib for Christmas and I decided to take a chance and throw it in my smoker. I covered it in Worcestershire sauce, then rubbed it with Montreal steak seasoning. I smoked it with cherry wood at about 235 degrees until the internal temp reached 130 degrees. After taking it out of the smoker, I covered it in foil and let it set for about 40 minutes for the juices to "settle". The temp raised to just over 135 during that rest.....perfect medium rare.

It turned out awesome! Best prime rib I ever ate! If you have a smoker, I highly recommend giving it a try.

If I knew how to post a picture from my phone, I would show you how it looked coming out of the smoker.

If you have to ask about the prices at 801 Grand you really cannot afford to eat there. I cannot and do not!

I can't believe no one has mentioned Chicago Speakeasy yet. Probably one place in Des Moines that doesn't get the publicity but is a hidden gem.

Can see this being a great coupon, but I have a menu question. Would you really spend $30+ on meat and then pay extra for starch and veggies?! It seemed that way on the menu...

Until you have a steak at a place that costs $30+ for an ala carte steak, you haven't had a really good steak, IMO. There is a difference between a meal at 801 (or other places like it) and lower or mid range steak houses, even though you feel some pain when they hand you the check.

Iowa beef steakhouse. Maybe its on a poorer side of town, but its delicious. Also a lot of places downtown offer specials on stuff like that. If you have big money, I'd recommend 801 grand (best I've ever had, but it was very very expensive) If not, chicago speakeasy also has some decent prime rib. Now I'm hungry

Poorer side of town? Wow... Apparently you rate restaurants by how much a person earns in an area, great way of looking at it... That place has been an Iowa tradition for years. There's plenty of poorer sides of town than off of 14th... Jethro's is in one of them and I doubt you'd complain about that.

*off soap box*

That being said, Big Steer is THE place in Des Moines to get prime rib. I've had it plenty of other places, they never have bad prime rib there. Ever.

On our budget, we'll be living in the "haven't had a really good steak" category for a long, long time.

Sounds delicious, but there's no way that we can pay for that place in the next few years.
