We have beaten Kansas as much as anyone in the Self era, and he's always complementary, but this felt different. He doesn't sound like he has a whole lot of answers or confidence. He didn’t give the impression that he was itching for a rematch, more like he was resigned to a second tier finish.
I thought his comment about roster building and how all our pieces fit was pretty telling.

At least he stuck around, and remember, he did win a Natty during NIL times, right?

How about the others that bailed immediately? Looking at you Ol' Roy, Coach K, and Jay Wright.

People in their mid-late 70s?

And Wright's been tied to some openings here and there.

As much as I can't stand Self, I think this was a very solid postgame from him. He straight up admitted that ISU beat up his team and had nothing but compliments about TJ and the team. Self is spot on about CuJo. CuJo's aggressiveness and confidence this year is through the roof and he's turned into an absolute stud.

That’s kind of bull ****

Self is an elite basketball coach. That’s been marginalized in the transfer era in which GM skills and locker room management are so important
I think it's the other way around. The advantage KU and other "blue bloods" have enjoyed is neutralized now. I'm sure Iowa State has had many players in my time as a fan who were not recruited and compensated strictly within the rules, but it was in no way a level playing field. Now their advantage is neutralized.

I'm sure he's a nice guy on a personal level but when it comes to hoops he's a cheating scumbag.

I love Coach Self's take on the game- especially concerning Dishon (pissed off he was not starting) and Curtis (thrilled to be starting). This Iowa State team is good beyond belief.

I like that Self will calmly just talk basketball with reporters even after a loss.

He's the grandpa of the league now and it's fun to listen to him articulate why certain things happen or don't. Literally been there, done that. Maybe his health stuff gave him a new perspective on things too.

Now I know why he was so disengaged during the game. He was sitting there taking notes for the post-game presser. :jimlad:

Man, times have really changed. 10 years ago this site would have been happy to watch Self get run over by a garbage truck in the street. Hell there would have been a line to drive the truck. He was REVILED for paying players, owning refs, and generally being a smug ***** about it.

But now, its a love fest.

And i have to agree, my attitude towards him has changed too. It helps not getting absolutely boned on 10 egregious calls per game. And as someone said, he is a lot more grandfatherly and complimentary of other coaches and programs. I think he has moved from hypercompetitive bastard to feeling like a mentor. He is still hypercompetitive, but he is a lot more appreciative of everything. Maybe the heart thing changed his mindset.

And it helps ISU won. I am sure it'd be less friendly if KU had won and been assisted by a controversial call LOL.

I was talking about that with my dad today. Self is a cheat and plays the refs like a fiddle but I can’t help but still like him.
I have some guys I work with who are in the business and one of them told me five years ago or so that he has been at events with Coaches and Bill Self walked in the room and it was like he rediated an aura. He would talk to a group and it felt like he was talking directly to you. Everybody in the room, including some pretty high profile coaches would stop and watch and listen to him. That's charisma.

Me being a Cyclone who knew that Kansas must be destroyed had a hard time hearing this.

I’m beginning to get the feeling that the landscape has changed from Kansas being a blue blood to Iowa State becoming a blood red.

It’s not mutually exclusive.

Nothing was a bigger recruiting moat than history and brand. We couldn’t offer money to offset that. Now we can.

You could argue so was illicit compensation, but the delta between what they’re paying and what we’re paying this season is still large, likely as large as ever.

KU bought more talent in the portal. They were preseason #1. The GM skills just weren’t there though and it marginalizes Self’s coaching. Imo player mobility is a bigger factor than player compensation

Want to know why TJ and his teams have been so incredibly successful?

Self summed it up better than anyone has so far during his post game presser. His summary is so simple, but so profound:

"I don't want to spin this negatively. It wasn't a lack of effort [on our players'part]. It was a lack of really understanding and respecting how competitive you had to be to be successful in this game.

Guys still try, but everybody fricken tries. Try is a baseline. You don't get a ribbon for trying. So that is the thing I thought we were lacking as much as anything tonight."

Every player in college basketball tries and every player thinks they're playing hard. But there's a level beyond playing hard that's called competing that the elite players and elite teams manage to reach.

You ask any Big 12 coach what they like most about Iowa State and they all say the same thing... it's how hard we compete.

Not only does TJ get it, but he has the ability to get his players to get it as well. I love Gilbert's quote from the other day when he said "Iowa State is not for everyone" and "We work hard as hell".

That's what I love so much about TJ and his teams. They are unquestionably the #1 in the nation when it comes to the grit scale

Man, we hit the lottery with TJ Otzelberger.

I feel like when you watch us play you can see the lessons TJ learned from the previous coaches TJ worked under.

McDermott: defensive toughness and rebounding.

Hoiberg: offensive spacing and flow.

Prohm: ?

Self won me over last year when he spent most of a late timeout watching the cop lead the Juicy Wiggle dance with the cheerleaders.

Larry Eustachy instilled that work harder ethic in his early teams, but he didn't couple it with holding himself to the same standard and empathy for his players so after a while it just wore them out and they didn't want to play for a guy they hated anymore. You have to have all the parts to sustain it.

And it's to the point of what he says and does in games, that even fans feel awesome and would run through a brick wall for him. Kind of like CMC at times.
