The whole show is a joke anymore. It's hard enough to make it in the music business let alone find a star out of no where every year. I think the season Carrie Underwood won was the last one I've watched in its entirety. Let's take a look at the winners:

Season 1: Kelly Clarkson: has had good success
Other notables: Justin Guarini: currently competing on CMT's Gone Country 3, Tamayra Gray: had some success acting, most notably on Boston Public
Season 2: Ruben Studdard: anyone hear of him lately?
Notables: Clay Aiken: again, see above Josh Gracin: having some success in country music
Season 3: Fantasia Barrino: big flop and recently in the news that her house is being foreclosed on
Notables: Diana DeGarmo: competed on Gone Country 1 and supposedly has moved to Nashville to try a career in country. Jennifer Hudson: has gone on to have a successful acting career and has won all 4 major acting awards (Jennifer Hudson - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia) also performed at this year's super bowl.
Season 4: Carrie Underwood: no explanation, the biggest star yet to win AI.
Notables: Bo Bice
Season 5: Taylor Hicks: his Ford commercial might be his greatest accomplishment sadly
Notables: Kellie Pickler: having success in country, Chris Daughtry, Bucky Covington: 3 hit singles on the country chart on debut album
Season 6: Jordin Sparks
Season 7: David Cook

Outside of Carrie and Kelly the winners haven't amounted to much while some of the runner ups have gone on the have some pretty good success, especially in country music of all places where AI is trying to find the next pop music star.

Simon tells it like it is and I agree with him 99% of the time I would say. Paula and her tearful stand up and applaud the departing contestant and Seacrest being Seacrest is probably my biggest issue with it.

I've just started watching this show for the first time (girlfriend makes me lol) Is it supposed to be in HD? The auditions were in HD, but I haven't gotten it in HD since then.

You forgot to add that Mandisa (I have no clue which season she is from as I refuse to watch the show) is starting to become a player in the Christian charts (I know that some here don't think that means anything, but by default that would mean she already has had more success than some of the competitors/winners).

Other than Simon (who I used to think was a ******), I absolutely hate the show and it's not worth my time. More often than not Simon has it right - most of these competitors really do not have any talent.

Dancing with the Stars is the gayest show of all time. American Idol is just getting old. The new judge, Kara, is a show wrecker.

I like the show. The judges are fun to laugh at. Simon's rude comments, Paula's drugged out gaze, Randy has become a characture of himself. What I think hurts the show is the public voting. They need to give the public less control and the judges more.

That being said, I like watching because a lot of these people can really sing. Plus, it's fun seeing some out of their element when they have to sing a style of music they don't know. I don't listen to pop music, though.

I agree that having the public in charge of voting allows for people to rig the results and whatnot, but I'd say that's also a huge part of the draw. That, in theory, your votes make a difference because we don't have interference from judges overriding your choice.
