2017 was the most brutal season in the History of Cyclone Football, in my opinion. 5 really close loses.

2005.

- Double overtime loss to Nebraska, at Nebraska
-a strange 10 point loss to a bad Baylor team, where a Greg Coleman fumble going into the end zone caused a 14 point swing
-a three point overtime loss to Missouri at Missouri
-a three point overtime loss to Kansas at Kansas where a win would have put us in the Big 12 championship game
-a three point loss to #14 TCU in Houston in a New Years Eve bowl game.

So much potential on that team but it seemed like every single crucial situation went against us.

Uh, also won 8 games after being projected at 3 or 4 including two top 5 ranked teams.

Even having a chance in those 5 losses is a huge upgrade.

Brutal is all those seasons where tbey were just bad everywhere.

That stupid TCU train horn from that game still gives me nightmares

The Missouri loss - we had Brad Smith completely befuddled and bottled up. Perfect defensive game plan. Then they put Chase Daniel in. The end. Don't wanna talk about that one anymore.

The Nebraska loss - Nick Leaders had the game winning interception thrown into his chest in OT by Zac Taylor. He holds onto that one and it's over, first win at kNU in about 30 years.

The Kansas loss - McCarney opts to play for OT when there were about 90 seconds left in the game, the wind at our backs, and Todd Blythe lurking out at the boundaries. That was after a questionable video review gave KU the tying TD, even after he had been ruled on the field as being stopped short of the goal line on 4th down.

The Baylor loss - First conference road victory for Baylor in the Big 12, ever. How long was that stretch? 10 years or something?

I still have all of these on VHS, sadly.

As far as I'm concerned this will always be the shining example of a season of "what ifs." I'm guessing Danny Mac thinks about this season often. Probably in his nightmares.

I've always said it was what led to Mac being gone the season after. They would have gotten worked by Texas in the Big 12 Champ game but could have at least gotten a really nice record.

Never knew if the chemistry was off or what but that team had one big mental block.

2005. The year where Baylor was our worst loss (by point margin), and we could have been as good as 11-0 in the regular season. Perhaps the best defense ISU has ever had.

2002 was similarly painful. Started out the season 6-1 (should have been 7-0 - HE WAS IN!!!) and was ranked top 10. Then the bottom fell out. Finished the regular season 1-5 and got shipped out to play Boise St on their own blue turf.
