I am a snowbird in Tucson and get a heavy dose of the Wildcats in the local media.
The Arizona Daily Star, Tucson’s local paper, usually has a 1 to 2 page preview before each game and about 3 pages of post game coverage.
The sports page headline this morning was “Short-handed Cyclones still a tough task for Cats”
The sports writer did a good job identifying the current status of ISU’S roster.
Arizona’s coach, Sean Miller, must know CSP fairly well. Miller said “I think they have an excellent team, certainly Steve is a really, really good coach. They have a great opportunity to be in this year’s NCAA tournament. When you’re playing that type of team, especially on a neutral court this early, they present a lot of challenges.”
The article also mentioned how many tickets were sold to Cyclone fans and how the gym will be Hilton Far West.
The article also mentioned that It is not cheap to participate in the Maui Invitational. Some of the travel expenses are covered, but Arizona had to pay $35k for marketing and administrative expenses. The tournament contract also states UA had to put the Maui Invitational logo with a link to the tournament website. They also had to send 4 mailers or emails promoting the tournament and travel packages to season ticket holders . I assume the other participating teams had the same requirements.
